Definition  Also called (MTC) - is a form of thyroid carcinoma which originates from the parafollicular cells (C cells), which produce the hormone calcitonin. Diagnosis  Diagnosed by cancer markers in blood calcitonin and (CEA)  Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) — CEA is a substance that may be made by advanced MTC that should be tested for in the blood along with calcitonin.  Ultrasound — A thyroid ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging study in which sound waves are used to see an accurate picture of the thyroid gland  Genetic testing  Fine needle aspiration (FNA)  Diagnosed by cancer markers in blood calcitonin and (CEA)  Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) — CEA is a substance that may be made by advanced MTC that should be tested for in the blood along with calcitonin.  Ultrasound — A thyroid ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging study in which sound waves are used to see an accurate picture of the thyroid gland  Genetic testing  Fine needle aspiration (FNA)
