GOLGI APPARATUS

STRUCTURE  Unique structure that some say looks like a maze, but the structure is actually made of stacks of flattened membranous sacs, or cisternae, and it helps proteins travel from different points in the cell. Unlike the cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulum or ER, these membranes are not connected.  Cisternae- one of the large spaces under the arachnoid membrane.  Usually comes in a group of 5-8  Cisternae also helps proteins travel from different points in the cell using enzymes.

FUNCTION  A major function is the modifying, sorting and packaging of proteins for release. It is also involved in the transport of lipids around the cell, and the creation of lysosomes.  The Golgi apparatus acts to process and package the macromolecules such as proteins and lipids that are made by the cell.  It is also involved in the transport of lipids around the cell, and the creation of lysosomes.

FUN FACTS!  The Golgi body collects substances from the endoplasmic reticulum.  It is made of a stack of membrane-bound sacs.  It produces vesicles which carry emissions to the surface of the cell.  Some modification can take place before substances are buried.  An example of an animal cell with many Golgi bodies is an epithelial cell that secretes mucus.  The cell wall of plant cells is exported to the outside of the membrane by Golgi bodies.

ORGANISMS, ORGANISMS, ORGANISMS  The Golgi apparatus is found in all plant and animal cells and is the term given to groups of flattened disc-like structures located close to the endoplasmic reticulum.
