Games, Motivation & Learning with Quizlet Bo Yang Instructional Support Specialist Woodbridge Campus 1

2 It’s not that people can’t learn, it’s just that they don’t want to learn.

Games and Motivation  Games and intrinsic motivation  intrinsic (internal causes)  extrinsic (external causes)  intrinsic motivation is more effective than extrinsic.  Games, by definition and design, rely on intrinsic, not extrinsic motivation. Psychologically it places the learner at the center of the action and progress depends on intrinsic drivers. 3

Games and Motivation  Games and autonomy  compulsory  Voluntary  Learners must feel that they are choosing to learn, even if that choice is illusory  The advantage of games is that it is mostly a voluntary choice. Personal control and autonomy accelerate learning 4

Games and Motivation  Games and self-confidence  Self-confidence or self-esteem is a powerful motivational factor in determining whether an individual will persevere when faced with obstacles  Games deal with this issue by building confidence through scaled design. 5

Games and Motivation  Games and goals  motivation comes from the anticipation of the outcomes of an action and the value you place on those outcomes.  Goals give direction and incentives to persist until those goals are reached.  Games, of course, are packed with goals, strategic and tactical. 6

Games and Motivation  Games and challenge  Success in overcoming challenges increases one’s sense of achievement and self-esteem or self-belief.  Games and feedback  You need to know how well you are doing as you move towards your goal.  the learner needs to have control of their learning through open structures, combined with highly participatory content and formative feedback.  Games and social incentives  Social approval or disapproval by people who matter to you also matters in motivation 7

What is Quizlet?  Quizlet is a free website providing learning tools for students, including flashcards, study and game modes.  It was created by high school sophomore Andrew Sutherland in 2005 and now contains over 30 million study sets.
