Characters can be blended, having qualities of more than one archetype at once. There are many specialized sub-archetypes under each major category. (Think about the shadow/villain character type, for instance. There are infinite ways in which a character can fit that particular role.) Archetypes only describe the basic frame of a character’s nature. There’s lots of room for customization.

The essence of the hero is not bravery or nobility, but self- sacrifice. The hero must pay a price to obtain his or her goal. The hero's journey during a story is a path from the ego, the self, to a new identity. The hero must learn in order to grow and succeed.

The herald announces the challenge which begins the hero on his story journey. May not be a person; it can be an event or force.

The shadow is the worthy opponent with whom the hero must struggle. Can be a character, a group/force, or even a part of the hero’s own self. Is often evil, but may not be, as long as it’s a force that the hero struggles against.

The mentor aids or trains the hero, representing the wiser and more godlike qualities within us. The mentor equips the hero by giving him gifts which are important in his quest.

The first obstacle, guards the gateway to the Special World. May be a lesser villain, henchman, or neutral character. Tests the hero's bravery and worthiness to show that the journey will not be easy.

The shapeshifter changes role or personality, often in significant ways, and is hard to understand. The shapeshifter's alliances and loyalty are uncertain. This keeps the hero off guard.

The Trickster is a humorous mischief maker. He/she provides the comedy relief that a story often needs to offset heavy dramatic tension.
