Putting Themes to Work for You 2 Choosing the right theme is very important in order to convey everything you want to convey. The theme sets the tone for your presentation.
Anatomy of a Theme 3 Themes are a combination of theme colors theme fonts theme effects backgrounds that are applied to one slide, several slides, or an entire presentation.
Anatomy of a Theme Continued 4 Themes appear in the Themes gallery on the Design tab. When you open the Themes gallery, you can see which themes are used in the presentation, custom themes (if any have been created), and the built-in themes.
Changing or Customizing a Theme 5 You can change the theme using the built-in combinations of theme colors, fonts, and effects, or customize the theme by creating new combinations of theme colors or fonts. You can save your customizations so that you can use them again and again, which will save you time in the future.
Customizing Theme Colors 6 When you click the Colors button, the Theme Colors gallery displays all of the color sets from the built-in themes, along with the corresponding theme name. To create custom colors, click Create New Theme Colors at the bottom of the Theme Colors gallery.
Changing the Slide Background 7 To change the background style, click the Background Styles button on the Design tab. Background styles are determined by the theme, so as the theme changes, so do the gallery choices.
Using a Picture as a Background 8 1. These are the panes and tabs of the Format Background dialog box. Switching panes changes available options. 2. To use a picture or texture for a slide background instead of a solid or gradient fill, click this option. 3. To insert a picture from a file, click File, and then locate the picture that you want to add. To paste a picture from the Clipboard or another program, copy the picture, and then click Clipboard. To use clip art, click Clip Art, and then type a word that describes the clip in the Search text box.
Fading a Picture 9 To change the brightness or contrast of a picture, you use the options on the Picture pane in the Format Background dialog box. Click Recolor to open the gallery, where you can apply a stylized effect (such as washout, grayscale, or sepia tone) to a picture, and then, under Color Modes, click Washout.

Saving a New Theme File Click the More button to open the Theme gallery. 2. Open the Save Current Theme dialog box, where you can save your theme. 3. Themes that you customize and save appear here.
Saving a New Theme Continued 12 After you save your custom theme, you can apply it to either a new or an existing presentation by opening the Themes gallery and then clicking the thumbnail under Custom.
