2 The Symbol and the Flag The Symbol and the Flag  The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland  The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the official name of the state which is referred to as Great Britain or England.  The capital of Great Britain is London.  The flag is blue, red, white. It is called Union Jack.

3 The Geographical Position The Geographical Position  The UK is an island state. It is situated on the British Isles, which consist of 2 large islands (Great Britain and Ireland) and a number of small ones.  There are 4 parts constitute the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland.

4 England  The capital of England is London.  The national symbol of England is a red rose.  The flag of England is white and red.

5 Scotland  The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh.  People speak Scottish and English.  The national symbol is a thistle.  The national flag is blue and white.

6 Wales   The capital of Wales is Cardiff.   People speak English and Welsh.   Wales has two national symbols – the daffodil and the leek.  The national flag is a red dragon on the white and green background.

7 Northern Ireland  The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast.  People speak Irish and English.  The shamrock and a red hand is the national symbol.  The national flag is red and white.

8 The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is parliamentary monarchy.  The Queen Elizabeth II is the head of the state.  The Queen can summon Parliament or dissolve it, and acts only on the advice of her Ministers.  British Parliament consists of 2 Houses: the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
