POLITICAL PHILOSOPHERS A brief background

THE PHILOSOPHERS There are many philosophers for politics. Some have made it a career. I will briefly explain the important few that you will need to know for the future and on the Unit Test.

NICCOLO MACHIAVELLI Renaissance philosopher that believed in Realism. Believed rule under Princes and that it was better to be feared than loved. “The Ends Justify the Means”

PLATO Plato- One of the first political philosophers. Divided up the system between guardians, soldiers and workers. Believed in Autocracy

VLADIMIR LENIN Believed in Marxism; however he adopted it in a different way. Instead of the workers rising up, Lenin believed an educated vanguard was needed to lead the revolution to a proletariat dictatorship. This was called Leninism

SUN TZU Influential Asian philosopher. Wrote the book The Art of War. Politics he believed was developed through war. One can only rule if he is able to win wars.

OTHER MAJOR PHILSOPHERS Thomas Hobbes- Humans are evil- consider a realist John Locke- Humans are naturally good, strong liberalist belief.
