Pepita Talks Twice is about a young girl who speaks two languages, English and Spanish. Let’s discuss: What Spanish words do you know? Many of our words in English come from Spanish. Let’s check it out!

Vocabulary

language I know how to speak one language. Language means a spoken or written human speech.

Spanish My friend grew up in Mexico and speaks Spanish. Spanish is a language.

tortilla I took the last tortilla at the dinner table. A tortilla is a round, flat, Mexican bread.

enchilada My mom makes the best enchiladas. An enchilada is a tortilla rolled around a filling, then covered with spicy sauce.

salsa I love to dip chips in spicy salsa. Salsa is a spicy sauce usually made of tomatoes, onions, and peppers.

tamales On my trip to Mexico, we stopped at a restaurant and ate tamales. Tamales are fried chopped meat and crushed peppers rolled in cornmeal dough and steamed.

taco I add meat, cheese, lettuce, and tomato to my taco. A taco is a tortilla folded around a filling such as ground meat or cheese.
