Lesson 4 (Writing Equations from Word Problems)  How do you write equations from word problems?  First, highlight or underline all important information. This includes math vocabulary that will let you know what operation to use.  Look for words such as: per, each, more than, less than  Remember: Trying to write in form of y=mx+b

Lesson 4 (Writing Equations from Word Problems)  Example 1  Scott has a friend in another town. A phone call to his town is long distance. The charge is $.75 cents to call plus $.10 cents for each minute. Write an equation to represent the total cost, C, based on M number of minutes.  How much would a 15 minute call costs?  How many minutes can they talk for $10.00?

Lesson 4 (Writing Equations from Word Problems)  Example 2  Pocket sized stuffed animals cost $20 per box plus $2,300 in fixed costs to make them. Write an equation to represent the total cost, C, based on A number of boxes.  What does it cost to make 250 boxes?  How many boxes of stuffed animals can be made with $5,000?

Lesson 4 (Writing Equations from Word Problems)  Example 3  A triangular piece of land has two sides that are the same length and a third side that is 10 feet less than twice the length of the shorter sides. Write an equation to find P, the perimeter of the triangle.  If the perimeter is 90 feet, what are the lengths of the sides?
