In 1949 China became a COMMUNIST COUNTRY “The People’s Republic of China” – Red China Mao Zedong was the Party Chairman and President of the CCP. Chou En Lai was Prime Minister.

What were Mao’s problems? 1. Wartime damage to industry 2. Inflation 3. Population growth 4. Unemployment 5. Social and political divisions 6. He wanted to establish control

What were Mao’s solutions? 1. Land reform 2. Five year plans in industry 3. Social reforms 4. Thought reforms – propaganda Flowers Movement 6. The Great Leap Forward 7. The Cultural Revolution

China became a ONE PARTY STATE All other parties were suppressed - WHY? Mao didn’t want any opposition to the CCP. All of Mao’s rivals were dismissed - WHY? So that there was no opposition to Mao – he was in charge. Any one against Communism was labelled “counter-revolutionary” All GMD supporters were converted or killed e.g.65,000 killed in Guangzhou 28,000 killed in Shanghai Churches were shut and religion banned – WHY? Mao wanted to be the only God people worshipped so that anti Communist ideas could not be spread
