Elements of Design - Line Introduction to Floral Design Miss. Perry

L INE ● What is a Line? ● Line is a visual path that directs eye movement through a composition. ● Line is used to lead your eyes through a work of art ● A line is 1-dimensional due to its length (or height) and small width ● Dimension means the amount of space an object takes up in one direction ● 2-D objects have height and width ● 3-D objects have height and width and depth

L INE ● Actual Lines are physical like a stem of a flower or a branch ● Implied lines are ones that create the mind’s eye to visually link two or more points ● They are suggested rather than real lines ● Placement of flowers can create an implied line

L INE A LINE DESIGN is an arrangement where line is the more dominant element over actual form

L INE ● Kinds of Lines: ● Static Lines – create strength & stability in an arrangement & are unchanging, rigid, and do not show motion ● Vertical lines move straight up and down, they do not lean ● Horizontal lines are parallel to the horizon and do not slant ● Dynamic Lines – move in more than one direction & shows movement & energy ● Diagonal lines slant somewhere between a horizontal and vertical ● Curved lines change direction gradually forming wiggly, spiral, or circled lines

L INE ● Line Variation ● Length: lines can be long or short ● Width: lines can be thick or thin ● Texture: lines can be rough or smooth ● Direction: lines can move in any direction, such as vertical, horizontal, or diagonal ● Degree of Curve: lines can curve gradually or not at all, become wavy, or form spirals

A CTIVITY ● In your notebook, draw and label the various types of lines and the possible variations for those lines.
