Cruise Update: What’s New in the World of Cruising? Flo Powell, Director, ACE

The Cruise Industry is growing 2 million Brits to cruise by 2014

“The two key drivers remain value and quality” Bill Gibbons, Director, PSA “No Longer for the Overfed, Newlywed, and Nearly Dead" Rick Sasso, President of Celebrity Cruises and Chairman of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). “The economic downturn forced cruise lines to offer more incentives such as onboard credit, cabin upgrades and other perks.” Douglas Ward, author of the Berlitz Guide to Cruising. Why is the Cruise Industry growing? 66% of passengers cited ‘value for money’ as the reason for choosing their last cruise. PSA Cruise Review 2011

Cruise Destinations – changing demand The Med increased its share even more in 2010

Cruise Destinations – changing demand “75% of 2010 customers put the cruise destination in their top 3 reasons for booking their cruise compared with 65% in 2009”

Cruising Comes Home... Worldwide events, natural occurrences, political uncertainty and the collapse of travel operators... Rises in APD discouraging air travel 10% increase in the number of ex-UK cruises 22,000 Brits took a Round Britain cruise in 2010 Plus, Southampton was named the busiest cruise port in Northern Europe

Ultra-Luxury Cruising still on the up... Holidays are still considered to be a necessary luxury (Kuoni) Trip Advisor says more British holidaymakers are likely to enjoy a luxury holiday by far-flung shores in per cent of recession-weary Brits intend to spend more and to travel further in 2011 The ultra-luxury cruise sector grew by 6% in 2010 Since 2004, sales in the Ultra- Luxury sector have grown 46% 1 in 7 of all cruise passengers pay more than £2,500 per head

Cruise Industry – Booking Methods In 2010, over three quarters of cruise passengers book through travel agents

New to Cruise continues... In 2010, 1 in every 3 passengers was on their first-ever cruise Cruising has attracted 2.4m first timers over the past five years. More families are now cruising with children so the average age of a cruise passenger has therefore dropped (7% of passengers were under 18 years old; 13% of passengers are under 35)
