College Physics Chapter 1 Introduction 1. What is science? 2. Measurements 3. Matter 4. Dimensional Analysis 5. Uncertainty 6. Significant figures 7. Conversions 8. Order of magnitude 9. Coordinate systems 10. Basic Trigonometry

What is Science? Definition Theory Experiment What is Physics

Fundamental Quantities and Their Dimension What is a dimension? Basic Types

Units What is it? Different Types

Systems of Measurement CGS MKS FPS SI

Standard Definitions Length Mass Time

Prefixes for Powers of 10 Kilo Mega Milli Micro Nano Pico

Structure of Matter

Dimensional Analysis What is it? What is the Basic condition? Limitations

Example - Dimensional Analysis The period of a simple pendulum, defined as the time for one complete oscillation, is measured in time units and is given by where ℓ is the length of the pendulum and g is the acceleration due to gravity, in units of length divided by time squared. Show that this equation is dimensionally consistent. (You might want to check the formula using your keys at the end of a string and a stopwatch.)

Uncertainty in Measurements What is it? How do I find it?

Uncertainty in Measurements - Example 1. Two I-beams are to be joined end to end. One has been measured to be m long; the other, 4.3 m. When they are bolted snugly together, what value can you accurately give for the total length?

Significant Figures What is it? How do I work with it? Examples

Conversions What is it? Why worry about it? Example:

Examples of various units measuring a quantity

Order of Magnitude What is it? When is it used?

Order of Magnitude - Example 1. An automobile tire is rated to last for miles. Estimate the number of revolutions the tire will make in its lifetime.

Coordinate Systems What is it? How many types do I need to know?

Trigonometry Review

Example 1.A point is located in a polar coordinate system by the coordinates r = 2.5 m and θ = 35°. Find the x and y coordinates of this point, assuming the two coordinate systems have the same origin.

Example 1.A right triangle has a hypotenuse of length 3.00 m, and one of its angles is 30.0°. What are the lengths of (a) the side opposite the 30.0° angle and (b) the side adjacent to the 30.0° angle?
