Goal 1: To share what we know about plants and discuss what else we would like to know Goal 2: To practice observation and prediction skills Learning Target: Plants have a distinct life cycle

Setting Up Our Notebooks You will need a notebook to record the life cycle of your plant IMPORTANT!!!! For each day, write the date at the top of the Lesson page…Why? We are going to be recording the changes in growth. In order to be effective observers, it’s important to know the time that has passed so that we can keep track of how old our plants are. Today is April 28, 2011

Getting Started… For the next six weeks we will be observing the growth and development of a special type of plant. ACTIVATE YOUR SCHEMA: KWL!!! Plants are all around us. You probably know many things about plants already. Before we begin, share what you ALREADY KNOW about plants and what QUESTIONS you would like to have answered.

Looking at a Bean Seed You are going to look at your bean seed with your hand lens. Remember that magnifiers can help you see things more clearly that your eye alone cannot. But do not forget to use your other senses while observing! Please record your observations on activity sheet #1 on the left hand side.

Materials Between you and your science partner, please take the following materials from the materials center: 1. Hand lens 2. A dry bean seed 3. Science tray

Let’s Discuss your Findings! What types of adjectives did you use to describe your dry bean seed? COLOR? SHAPE/SIZE? TEXTURE? (feel) ODOR? Predictions for the soaked bean seed tomorrow?
