Creating and Using iBooks Tamra S. Davis, Ph.D. Illinois State University Business Teacher Education

First Steps iBooks is only available for Macintosh computers using Mac OS X Lion Version or later App is available through the Apple Mac App Store—Free Used to create books that can be viewed on an iPad or you can convert to a PDF Must have a publisher’s account with Apple if you want to charge money for your e-book

Not a Mac User? I won’t be offended if you want to leave to attend a session that has greater applicability to you personally

Agenda A VERY fast overview of creating an entire book You may try to follow along, or you may find it easier to take notes A video of this presentation will be available from my website by the first of the year Assuming that the quality of the video is sufficient to upload

References This presentation is based upon the book iBooks Author: Publishing your First Ebook by Maria Langer I have paraphrased the book into this short presentation

Starting Your First Book iBook documents begin with a template A collection of page layouts for book elements, including chapters, sections, and page If you have your computer with iBooks Author loaded, you can follow along

Open iBooks Author Select a template Landscape with Portrait resembles a traditional book Portrait only resembles an e-book when viewed on an iPad Save the file to your computer

Setting Preferences iBooks Author > Preferences Select General Checkmark Show size and position when moving objects Include preview in document by default Show font preview in Format Bar font menu Select Preview the entire book If you have a long book, Current Section only may be best

More on Preferences Select Rulers Checkmark all 4 bottom boxes Select Auto-Correction Choose based upon your personal preferences My preferences are shown Close Your preferences are automatically saved

Document Information Open the Inspector if it is not visible Select the Document button to open the Document Inspector Set the author, book title, and other items as desired

Understanding Pages and Text Boxes Chapter Pages Each chapter begins with a Chapter Pages A single page that includes the Chapter Number and Name, plus any informational text needed Graphic intensive Chapter Pages can be a standard page or a preface page

More Pages Section Pages The second level of a book’s structure There are 5 types of Section Pages Section Page A text box for a list of items and a text box for the beginning text of the section Section Text Page Includes two columns of text Copyright, Dedication, and Foreword pages Special pages near the beginning of the book

And More Pages Pages Normal text pages 1 Column 2 Column 3 Column Blank 2 Column is the default

Adding Pages to Your Book A new file begins with three pages A Chapter page A Section page A Regular text (2-column) page Multiple ways to add a page to your book Try to add a new Chapter, Section, and Text page to your book As you add text, the book will add a default text page to accommodate what you are writing Remove a page by selecting it in the Book pane and pressing Delete

Changing a Page’s Layout You can make limited changes to the layout Click the down arrow in the Book pane

Adding a Text Box Default text boxes are linked Custom text boxes are independent Can be used for a sidebar or heading

Adding Text Type directly into the document Insert as a Section—Key in Copyright Information Copy and Paste From any source document Insert as a Chapter Preface—Preface file Import from Word or Pages You can import formatted text from either Word or Pages and the formatting will remain (usually) Insert chapter from Word—Use Chapter 1 file Drag and Drop You can drag the icon for an Apple Pages or Microsoft Word document into the Book Pane to add it as a chapter or section of your book Create a Chapter Page—Insert Chapter 2 file

Text Inspector You may need to “clean up” inserted text Text Lists Tabs More

Adding Images Drag and Drop Add the “How to Hold a Camera image below bullets in Chapter 1 Page 1 Placeholder images In the Book pane, click the Chapter 1 thumbnail Click the image of Earth to select it Find a picture in your Photos folder Drag the icon onto the Earth image Repeat for a Section Header

Adding Tables In the Book pane, select the page where you want to add a table Click the Table button to add the table Drag the table to the upper-left hand corner Open the Table Inspector if it is not visible You can set the table parameters from the Inspector Table parameters function as you would expect

Adding Charts Works basically the same as adding a Table Use the Chart Inspector to to modify the parameters in the chart

Interactive Features Hyperlinks Use the Link Inspector Widgets Insert > Widget > _____ Gallery Use the Gallery Widget to add a photo gallery containing two or more images Media Include Audio or video files in your books

More about Widget Review Create an interactive quiz for readers Keynote Add a Keynote presentation to the book PowerPoint cannot be added Other advanced widgets are also available

Adding a Cover Should contain Title Subtitle Author Name Cover Image

Adding Intro Media An optional feature that displays or plays the first time the reader opens the book in iBooks

Adding Front Matter Pages Copyright Page Should always be included with a copyright symbol, copyright date, copyright holder name, and contact information for inquiries Include the ISBN if you have one Dedication Page A page where you can acknowledge people who helped you write the book or contributed to the book

Additional Front Matter Foreword Introduces the book or its topic Often written by someone other than the author Can be used as a marketing tool

Customizing a Table of Contents Click the Table of Contents page in the Book pane Make sure that you are in Portrait View Using the TOC Inspector, edit the TOC as desired

Adding a Glossary Turn in the Glossary Toolbar View > Show > Glossary Toolbar Select a word Click Add Term Creating an Index from the Glossary As you find/add instances of the term, you can add it as an index item

Creating a Preview You need the iBooks app for your iPad Connect your iPad to your Mac with a USB cable On the iBooks Author toolbar, click the Preview Button Open iBooks if prompted Wait for iBooks Author to generate a preview file Review and Troubleshoot your book

Troubleshooting Questions Start in Landscape View Record problems on paper and fix all at once to save time Order for review TOC Glossary Check all links Examine images Test interactive elements Look for style issues such as Headings on one page and text on the next page

More Troubleshooting Check again in Portrait View After the check, fix errors Preview the book again You are ready to export and share
