Intro to Food Chains!!!
Objective By the end of the day, Achievers on the ROAD to college will be able to identify producers, consumers and decomposers in a food chain. Achievers on the ROAD to college will also be able to answer our question of the day!
Question of the Day! How is an organism’s survival dependent on other organisms?
It’s tough to be an organism! They have to survive the freezing cold tundra and the burning hot desert. But don’t forget why they use camouflage and mimicry – they have to avoid being eaten by other organisms!!
Think for a minute… About what you ate last night Your diet was part of a food chain, with you at the end of that food chain.
The Food Chain The food chain has 4 basic parts: - The sun - Producers - Consumers - Decomposers
Each of the organisms in a biome fills the energy role of (1)producer, (2)consumer or (3)decomposer – “Energy role” basically means where it gets its food from!
The Food Chain The food chain has 4 basic parts: - The sun - Producers - Consumers - Decomposers
The Sun Provides energy for everything in the world
The Food Chain The food chain has 4 basic parts: - The sun - Producers - Consumers - Decomposers
Producers An organism that can make its own food is a (4)producer – plants! – Remember photosynthesis?
Producers Plants- make their own food through the process of photosynthesis Contain the most energy that’s why veggies are so good for you to eat!!!!
ROAD check Which of the following is an example of a producer? A. Elephant B. Flower C. Dog D. Cat
ROAD check Which of the following is an example of a producer? A. Elephant B. Flower C. Dog D. Cat
ROAD check Where do plants get the energy they need to grow?
ROAD check Where do plants get the energy they need to grow? From the sun!
The Food Chain The food chain has 4 basic parts: - The sun - Producers - Consumers - Decomposers
Consumers Other organisms cannot make their own food. They depend on producers for food and energy. An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms is a (5)consumer
There are 3 types of consumers One eats only plants One eats only meats One eats both plants and meat!
Organisms that eat only plants are called (6) herbivores Herbivores eat PRODUCERS
Consumers that eat only animals are called (7) carnivores
A consumer that eats both plants and animals is called an (8) omnivore
ROAD check What type of consumer are YOU?
ROAD check What type of consumer are YOU? Omnivore
ROAD check what am i??
ROAD check what am i?? Carnivore
ROAD check what am i??
ROAD check what am i?? Herbivore
ROAD check what am i? Eats nuts, fruits and bugs
ROAD check what am i? Omnivore Eats nuts, fruits and bugs
The Food Chain The food chain has 4 basic parts: - The sun - Producers - Consumers - Decomposers
Organisms that break down wastes and dead organisms and return the nutrients to the environment are called (9) decomposers
Flashback! We talked about how trees in the deciduous forest shed their leaves, they fall on the forest floor and are broken down into nutrients by decomposers, and the nutrients stay in the ground making it very rich. Those DECOMPOSERS are what we’re talking about!

Food Chains A (10)food chain shows a series of energy exchanges in which one organism feeds on another and gets energy.
ROAD check What do you think the first level in every food chain will be? Hint: What organism gets its energy directly from the sun?
Food Chains The first organism in a food chain is always a (11)producer The second organism (1 st level consumer) eats the producer The 2 nd level consumer (12)eats the 1 st level consumer
Food Chains The arrow is pointing toward the (13)STRONGER animal that is doing the eating
ROAD check Who is the producer in this food chain?
ROAD check Who is the producer in this food chain? leaves
ROAD check Who are the consumers in this food chain? Slug, frog, heron
ROAD check Do the arrows point to the eaten or the eating? The arrows point to the organism that is eating
ROAD check Who is the heron eating? The frog!
ROAD check Who is the “Top Dog” in this food chain? The heron of course because it is the last organism. Energy flows from the sun and ends up in the heron.
ROAD check Where would you find fungi in this food chain? Hint: fungi are decomposers! After the heron because once the heron dies, the fungi will decompose the dead heron.
Independent Practice Create your own Food Chain Must have 4+ organisms Add plants of various types. Label them producers Add consumers showing links between producers. Label all of the consumers (herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores)
Example Food Chain
Question of the Day! How is an organism’s survival dependent on other organisms?
College Bound Answer! Energy flows through an ecosystem by one organism feeding on and gaining energy from another organism. In order to survive in an ecosystem, consumers need to get energy from other consumers or from producers.
Exit Ticket Producer, Consumer or Decomposer? 1. Bats- Insects 2. Sunflower 3. Rabbits – eat dandelions 4. Cattle – eat grass 5. Corn 6. Fox – eat rabbits and bugs 7. Black bears – eat berries and bugs 8. Beech tree
