Once Upon A Time… An open Lesson Abby Wride and Maria Cloutier

Opening Activity Create your own Fairy Tale! Lets start with a picture and a title “Blue the Dragon and his enchanted story”

A Quick Recap… “Fairytales, or folktales, are stories that grew out of the lives and imagination of the people, or folk.” - Essentials of children’s literature

What age group is this lesson for? This lesson could be as expansive or as simple as you wanted, ranging anywhere from elementary to high school level.

Essential Question: What can different versions of fairytales tell us about change in culture and time?

Example Title: The Bear Prince Originated from Switzerland Summary- A father left for the market to get his daughter’s gifts (particularly a grape). Father could not find a grape, but a dwarf told the man to go to a meadow to find one. Father met a mean bear at vineyard and agreed to a deal with the bear. The father got greeted by his daughter when he arrived home. (Making his daughter now the bear’s possession from their deal at the vineyard.) One year later the bear came for the man’s daughter. The bear took the daughter to the castle and she became his wife. One year later she went to visit her father; he tried to give her matches but failed. On the third year she visited her father. She finally got the matches from him. That night she lit the match and saw that the bear was actually a prince and she broke his spell. They lived happily ever after.
