Civil War Images Lesson By: Chris Taylor Photo From The Library of Congress: ~pp_rTSZ::displayType=1:m856sd=cwpb:m856sf= Photo From The Library of Congress: ~pp_rTSZ::displayType=1:m856sd=cwpb:m856sf=

Introduction Photographs and images bombard us every day. Think about how we can easily take a photograph of our friends, our cat, or a sporting event with just a click of the cell phone. Obviously, this has not always been the case. The Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, was the first major conflict that the camera was utilized to “record history.” General Robert E Lee Photo From The Library of Congress: I?ils:1:./temp/~pp_sb4D::displayType =1:m856sd=cwpbh:m856sf= General Robert E Lee Photo From The Library of Congress: I?ils:1:./temp/~pp_sb4D::displayType =1:m856sd=cwpbh:m856sf=

Task Instead of just reading about the Civil War, you will look at the war “through the eye of the camera.” This will allow you to “see” the different parts of the war as it truly was. True, these are black and white pictures but it will allow you to put real people to the tragedy of our worst war as a nation. The ironclad: Monitor Photo From the Library of Congress: The ironclad: Monitor Photo From the Library of Congress:

Process First: Go to – Click on “Taking Photographs in the Civil War” and read about the “Wet Plate Process.” Next: Go back to – Click on “Mathew Brady-Biographical Note” and quickly research the life of the most famous photographer of the Civil War. Mathew Brady Photo From the Library of Congress: ~pp_0Aw3::displayType=1:m856sd=cwp:m856sf= Mathew Brady Photo From the Library of Congress: ~pp_0Aw3::displayType=1:m856sd=cwp:m856sf=

Process Continued Thirdly, you will create a PowerPoint or Webpage of at least 10 different Civil War photographs about 10 different topics. Provide a caption of what the photograph is and also provide a reference of where the image was located (just like what has been done throughout this lesson with the pictures). The Monitor on the James River Photo from Library of Congress: temp/~pp_iE6C::displayType=1:m856sd= The Monitor on the James River Photo from Library of Congress: temp/~pp_iE6C::displayType=1:m856sd=

Process Continued Fourthly, to find the images for this presentation you will utilize the wonderful collection at the Library of Congress. Go back to – Click on “Search this Collection”. – Use the People, Places, Events, and Terms for Unit 12 to search. – Most terms will have a photo that corresponds to it. If it does not, choose another term. – Or, you can go to to search. – The terms are on the next slide….. Evaluation To finish the PowerPoint presentation or Webpage, of the ten images or photos that you found pick your top “three”. Put them on an extra slide or a different part of the webpage and explain the following: – What parts of the image did you find interesting? – Why was each image in your top 3 images? – How was the topic of each of your top 3 images important to the Civil War?

Conclusion Now that you have investigated the Civil War through the “eye of the camera,” you are ready for the final part of this lesson. Go back to – Click on “Solving a Civil War Photograph Mystery.” – Go through the process and include your answer in the final slide of your PowerPoint. Internet Safety and Copyright My district if very particular with Internet Safety. It is to the point that we as teachers are not allowed to defragment our computers. Therefore, Google images is blocked on our computers not to mention YouTube and others. With that in mind, I have limited this activity to the safe confines of the Library of Congress webpage. It has a great collection of Civil War images and I do not have to “worry” about the safety issues as much with it. I addressed the copyright issue earlier in the presentation for the students. They will be required to cite where they copied the images from for their presentations.
