This figure will grow up to 60% in There is a continous flow of people from rural to urban areas. Urban population is growing in 5 million people every month. Today, we have more than 20 megacities, having more than 10 millions inhabitants. Around 2020, we will have a minimum of 8 megacities more, half of them in developing countries. It is essential to have an integrated vision of the city, its needs and future development.

Diapositiva 7The City of the Future Experiences of European Universities FUTURE CITIES LABORATORY (FCL)  The Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) is a transdisciplinary research centre focused on urban sustainability in a global frame. It is the first research programme of the Singapore-ETH Centre for Global Environmental Sustainability (SEC).  It is an initiative of ETH (Zurich) and EPFL (Lausanne) with the two national universities of Singapore (NUS and NTU).  It is home to a community of over 100 PhD, postdoctoral and professorial researchers working on diverse themes related to future cities and environmental sustainability. A joint initiative of the two Swiss Federal Technical Universities Supported by the Swiss Government in cooperation with Singapore

The increasing deployment of sensors and hand-held electronics in recent years is allowing a new approach to the study of the built environment.  The way we describe and understand cities is being radically transformed - alongside the tools we use to design them and impact on their physical structure.  Studying these changes from a critical point of view and anticipating them is the goal of the SENSEable City Laboratory, a new research initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Institutional action scheduled and supported for a long term in order to convert UPM into a national and international reference in the City of the Future
