REDUCING In order to reduce you must find the greatest common factor (GCF).The first step to reducing is finding the greatest common factor. In order to reduce you must divide the numerator and denominator by the GCF. The greatest common factor is the biggest number both numerator and denominator can be divided by. So to simplify fractions divide the numerator and denominator by the greatest common factor.

INVESTIGATION 1 1.Bobby and Billy had an argument. Bobby said that if reduce 7/14 it comes out to 1/3. Billy disagreed and said it equals ½. Who is right. Why? 2. 55/70=11/14.What is the greatest common factor? 3. 40/60=2/3.What is the greatest common factor? 4. 6/8=3/4 what is the greatest common factor? 5.12/24=1/2 what is the greatest factor?

6.60/120 reduces to what? 7.30/40 reduces to what? 8.50/120 reduces to what? 9.40/50 reduces to what 10.20/96 reduces to what INVESTIGATION 1 CONTINUED

COMMON DENOMINATORS To find the common denominator you must make a factor rainbow. A factor rainbow is a list of factors from least to greatest. In order to make a factor rainbow you must take your multiple a list the factor from least to greatest find then find the number that all multiples have in common.

MIXED NUMBERS/IMPROPER FRACTIONS Improper Fractions are more than a whole so for example 5/2 is an improper fraction. To convert a improper fraction to a mixed number you have to divide 5 ( the numerator) by 2 (the denominator) to get 2 1/2. 1.8\4 =? 2.9/6=? 3.9/7=? 4. 12/7=? 5. 9/5=? To change the mixed number to an improper fraction you have to follow these steps. First you have to multiply the whole by the denominator. Then when you have the number you multiplied you add the numerator on to the product you got before and you’ve got a improper fraction /10 =? / / / /4

RECIPROCALS A reciprocal is a switched around fraction for example 4/5 reciprocated form 5/4. You can do this in a division problem.4/5 divided by 2/3. 4/5 x 3/2=8/15.

Multiplying : To multiply fractions you just multiply the numerator by the numerator and the denominator by the denominators then you reduce. 2/4 * 3/6 = 6/24 which reduces to ¼. Dividing: To divide fractions first you must change the division sign to a multipucation sign. When you change the signs you have to switch the fraction to the right of the multipucation. In order to change it around you must reciprocate. When you reciprocate you have to multiply the fractions and you get a divided fraction. Adding : First you find the least common denominator then you add the fraction. Don't forget to reduce! Example: 2/6 + 2/12=? 4/12 + 2/12= ½ Subtraction :In order to subtract fractions you first have to find a common denominator then once you find a common denominator use it as the denominator. Subtract the numerators and you just subtracted a fraction.

INVESTIGATION 1 1/4x2/6=? 4/6 / 3/12 =? 3/4x6/12=? 4/5x6/7=? 6/7-2/7=? ¾+6\7=? 4/12-9/12=? 4/5+3/5=? 6/7+5/7=? 4/5 / 7/8 2/6 / 7/8

WORD PROBLEMS Word Problems are a very easy skill master. Its basically a fraction problem in words Example: Alvin cleaned ¾ of the house how much does Owen have to clean. Colton at ¼ of the pie how much did Daniel eat. Jake did 4/7 of the math problems how many did Gage do. Tyler cleaned 5/8 of the house how much did Tanner clean. Jack and Jill were cleaning their attic if Jack cleans 1\4 and Jill cleans 12/16 who cleaned more. Jim and Anna are making cookies it requires 4/12 cup of flour and 8/12 cup of sugar which fraction is greater. Austin and Damien were jumping on a trampoline Damien jumped ¾ of yards Austin of jumped 8/12 of a yard who jumped higher?

WORD PROBLEMS CONTINUED Jack and Jill went up a hill Jack fell down and spilled all of his water on the down jill slid on the water jack spilled and she spilled 15/20 of her water what is 15/20 reduce to? Justin and Mark were cleaning a basement Justin cleaned 8/12 how much is left for Mark ?(reduced form) Jack and Jill are back and this time there fighting. Jack says that 2/4 reduced is ½ jill says its ¼ who is correct? Kim and John are cleaning there bedroom Kim said that if he cleans ¾ than John has to clean the rest is that fair why or why not?
