What is culture? System of beliefs, knowledge, institutions, customs/traditions, languages and skills shared by a group of people.

Why do we need culture? We learn about relationships, why we do things the way we do, how we do things, patterns, structures, and how to function as part of a group.

What does culture do? We develop social institutions ◦ government, ◦ economy, ◦ education, ◦ religion, ◦ family to structure society, influence behavior and respond to human needs.

Huh? Society tells us: ◦ WHO we are ◦ WHAT we should do ◦ HOW we should do it ◦ WHEN we should do it

What is the big picture? By learning about culture we understand more about who we are and where we’ve gotten our ideas…
