Early Child Sexuality (Ages 0-2 yrs)

The unique type of physical intimacy and emotional attachment between parent and infant is the early foundation of more mature forms of physical intimacy and love that develop later as a part of mature sexuality.

At the end of the terrible two’s, children begin to comprehend gender roles, they also tend to like their parent of the opposite sex

Neglect can have serious and long-lasting effects. It can be anything from leaving a child home alone to the very worst cases where a child dies from malnutrition or being denied the care they need.

Sexuality in Infancy and Childhood (Ages 3 to 11)

You, Your kids…and everything in between. (Ages 3-11)

The Early Years Exploration with self and others Parents’ reactions (negative/positive)…How would you react? Family interactions: Do’s and Don’t’s

Affection and Sexual Child Abuse Teaching what is allowed and what isn’t… Warning signs… Consequences…

Psychosexual Development -Still learning gender roles, social roles, and sexual scripts -Possibly confused on feelings they start to develop toward others

Influences on Psychosexual development Parental Influence -Imitate what parents do -Insecure vs secure infants -Parents believe their kids might get “too much information” -Most adolescents wish they can talk more freely to their parents

Influences on Psychosexual Development Peer Influence -Peers are the most common way adolescents learn about sex -Pressure put on both boys and girls

Influences on Psychosexual Development Religion -Adolescents who consider themselves religious and attend church services are less likely to engage in any type of sexual behavior -Might change attitudes toward sex

Gay, Lesbian, and Questioning Overview -Many adolescents will initially have fantasies and possibly experiment with same sex but will eventually fade away -“Questioning” individuals will usually experiment with both sexes

Gay, Lesbian, and Questioning Negative Factors -Society is still discriminating -Teens often use derogatory terms -Problems for certain gay and lesbians go further than just being a teen

Gay, Lesbian, and Questioning -Teens who identify with being gay or lesbian are -2x as likely to be threatned or injured with a weapon -2x as likely to have skipped school -4x more likely to attempt suicide -Generally more likely to be kicked out of the house or homeless
