Appomattox Courthouse After the siege of Petersburg, General Lee abandoned the Confederate capital. He headed southwest toward North Carolina However he was cut off by General Grant’s troops.

The battle April 7 th Grant sent Lee a letter requesting a surrender…? Lee was waiting for supply trains at the Appomattox Station. April 8 th Union Cavalry arrived first and burned the supplies.

Surrender April 9 th at 11:50 am, Lee sent a letter to Grant agreeing to surrender. Terms Major artillery would be turned over. Side arms, horses, and mules would remain. No imprisonment for treason.

The End of the War After Appomattox, there were still minor battles as 175,000 Confederate troops remained in the field. The final surrender of Confederate troops occurred June 23, 1865.
