WELCOME TO SEMINAR

Monday, October 27, 2014  Do Now  Explain your post high school plan. What do you want to do? What would be your ideal career? What steps do you need to take to achieve your dream?  Daily Target  I will be able to create an effective cover letter outlining my interest in applying for a college/internship/scholarship/job utilizing proper business letter form. AGENDA 1.Do Now 2.Why do we write cover letters? 3.Draft of a cover letter HOMEWORK/PRACTICE: Study or Read for at least 10 minutes in your area of concern.

 College Fair 10/30 at UPS  Bus leaves Lincoln at 5:20  Bus will return – leave UPS – at 7:30  Families are welcome to ride the bus as well

 It shows that you – the applicant – have your act together.  It justifies why you – the applicant – are right for the school or position.  Why the school or job should take a risk on you?  It entices the school or job to read your application/resume  It highlights your knowledge, skills and experience.  It reflects your enthusiasm.

 Business letter format is the correct format. (see example)  Make sure the letter is PERFECT! Spelling, punctuation, and grammar count. Have someone proofread the letter before using it.  Use “I” statements and action verbs when describing your experience.  Get to the point! Admission counselors/employers do not have the time to read lengthy letters. A cover letter should never exceed one page.

 Personalize - research the college/company – include something unique for each  If possible, explain why you want to attend that school or work for the company

 Tell why you are writing.  Example:  After doing much research about colleges in the area that have a Psychology program, I am applying to Ohio State University because of the outstanding reputation and the exceptional reviews that I have read from other recent graduates. Additionally, I am enthusiastic about Psychology program at the Ohio State University because of the graduate psychology programs that are offered.

 Describe your qualifications. Sell your skills and knowledge. Tell why you are interested in the company or college. Point out any related experience you have.  Continue to describe qualifications. Highlight relevant training or classes that relate to the job or major for which you are applying.

 Close by thanking the reader and requesting an interview.

 Is it clear? Does it state exactly what I want it to state?  Is it concise? Does it state what I want it to state in the fewest possible words?  Is it well organized?  Am I projecting to the employer or college the contribution I can make?  Have I stressed areas in my experience and/or education that are relevant to the person reading it?

 Look at the example cover letters and create a draft cover letter  Have a couple peer proofread it
