Mathematics Textbook Tour

Ten Chapters –Each chapter follows this format: Chapter Problem Get Ready Three-Part Lesson Chapter Review Practice Test Cumulative reviews after 3 chapters –At end of chapters 3,6, and 9 Glossary –Definitions of mathematical terms used in the book

Outcomes for the chapter are at the beginning of each chapter. Chapter Set-up

Each chapter begins with a chapter problem that connects math to the students’ world.

Ideas from the chapter problem recur in the Check Your Understanding sections throughout the chapter and concludes at the end of the Practice Test.

The “Get Ready” Section “Get Ready” is a brief review of the skills that are important for the students to understand before beginning the new chapter.

The Three-Part Lesson Part One –Discover the Math –Examples and Solutions Part Two –Communicate the Key Ideas Part Three –Check Your Understanding Investigate Guide Instruct Reflect Practice

Discover the Math These activities are designed to help students build their own understanding of the math. They may be done –individually –in small groups –together as a class –as teacher-led instruction

Examples and Solutions Worked solutions to examples show students step-by-step methods to solve the problems.

Communicate the Key Ideas This is the chance for students to write and talk about the concepts from the first part of the lesson (DTM). Here students and teachers can assess the students’ understanding of the concepts.

Check Your Understanding In the “Check Your Understanding” section, there are a variety of questions that require different levels of understanding. Straightforward Questions Application Questions Assessment Questions Extend Questions

Many Nova Scotian teachers were involved in the creation of the 7–9 textbooks.

Relevant Nova Scotia information and pictures were included in the development of concepts and problems throughout the textbooks. Some of the Nova Scotian pictures included in the textbooks are on the next two slides.

The pink-edged sulphur butterfly can be found in Nova Scotia in bogs and wooded areas where blueberries grow. The average wingspan of the butterfly is 3.3 cm. Halifax Citadel, shown below. Marissa Walter hails from Halifax. She is an accomplished athlete who has won gold medals in the provincial sprint meets in the 100-m and 200-m events. In addition to being a great athlete, she is talented academically, musically, and socially. Margaret MacLean helped to preserve Scottish culture in Nova Scotia by contributing over 45 songs to the Cape Breton Gaelic Folklore Centre. Did You Know?
