Legal Implications FERPA The U. S. Board of Education issued a letter in August 2006 stating that identifying student information may not be transmitted to a third party. USG attorney recommends students’ be given a choice of taking a course with or without plagiarism detection, submit voluntarily or the instructor submit for the student using an anonymous code. Turnitin is developing an anonymous coding system which it plans to submit to the Board of Education for approval.

Creating A More Educated Georgia Student Intellectual Property Rights Turnitin has been sued by students several times. So far, all suits have been settled out of court with no judicial decision. In March, a new suit was filed against Turnitin by four high school students in Virginia and Arizona. A USG attorney feels this is not an issue because Turnitin does not affect the market value of a work submitted to it. MyDropBox segregates papers by institution.
