WR090 Skilled Writing through Inquiry: A Community of Scholars Examines Success, Grit, and Creative Intelligence WEEK 2 Thu., October 3, 2013

Please put your name card on the desk. Attendance & homework review Journal TED Talk Prepositions and prepositional phrases What to review for the quiz Homework review/collection Order of Business Thursday, Oct 3rd

Homework Due Please put your homework on the table near you so I can check it. Autobiography Final Draft Campus Places Assignment (accepted with extra credit for submitting it today; will also be accepted tomorrow) Capitalization ex. & Annotated Cornell Notes

Capitalization Homework Review Work with one or two other students to check and correct your homework. I will rove around the room answering questions and helping out where I can. I will mark, but not collect this homework. Keep the rules and the assignment in your portfolio in the grammar section. You’ll need to refer to it again and again all term. You’ll get the hang of capitalization throughout the term. It’s one of those things that you’ll really only learn as you write and proofread your reading/viewing responses, summaries, and essays.

Journal: Reflective Freewrite Today we are going to view another terrific TED Talk, this time about a topic directly related to Chapter Two in Outliers, “The 10,000 Hour Rule.” Watching, thinking about, and writing about this video will give you a richer understanding of what Malcolm Gladwell is getting at in his book. Please reflect on your visual learning. How much to you rely on visual images and video material to learn about and understand the world?

Video: “The Key to Success? Grit” Another terrific TED Talk! “The Key to Success? Grit”The Key to Success? Grit We will watch the video twice. The first time you should just relax and watch. The second time, take Cornell notes. Compare and improve your notes by working with a partner. Was it helpful to work with another person to improve and expand your notes Assignment: Watch the video again when you are at home or after class, and then annotate your notes. Due Friday, Oct. 4 th. We will be using this video as the basis of a viewing response.

Prepositions Preposition is derived from a Latin root words, pre, which means before, and position, which means place or, well, position. A preposition is a plain little word—although a few are longish--that relates a noun or a word that acts like a noun to another word in a sentence. For example, in this sentence, of chess The man in the yellow hat played a game of chess with Curious George, the word in relates hat to the man, the word of relates the word chess to the word game, and the word with relates Curious George to played. We use prepositions all the time! Check out the preposition list (handout), and then, with a partner, make a list of all of the prepositions on this slide.

Prepositional Phrases A prepositional phrase is the little group of words that begin with a preposition. Prepositional phrases are composed of two primary parts, the preposition itself and its object, which is a noun that follows the preposition. The official name of the object is the object of the preposition—no kidding. Learning to recognize the prepositions is the key to identifying the prepositional phrase. Recognizing prepositions also will help you learn to distinguish prepositions from verbs. Let’s look at a few (handout). Complete this assignment for homework, You’ll get the hang of it, and soon you’ll be able to pick prepositions out of a sentence in a heartbeat. We’ll workshop the prepositional phrase assignment in class on Friday just like we did the capitalization assignment today. Due Fri., Oct. 4 th.

Homework Due Friday, Oct. 4 th Learning Styles Assignment. Reminder: must be typed and double-spaced Campus Places Assignment accepted Annotated Cornell notes for “Grit” First portfolio check. I want to see a 1.5 to 2 inch binder with labeled dividers. Prepositions & Prepositional Phrases
