 Today, we are going to read a book called: Tooth Trouble. The author and the illustrator is, Jane Clarke and Cecilia Johansson. Be sure to pay close attention, because I will be asking questions throughout the book. Do your best! TOOTH TROUBLE ***When you are done reading a slide, be sure to click the SPACE BAR to move on to the next slide!!!!!!!

Wilbur and his mother were crunching their way through a huge pile of shellfish. “Owww!” said Wilbur. “My tusk hurts!” “You’ll have to go to the dentist,” Mrs. Walrus said. “I don’t want to go to the dentist,” said Wilbur.

Why does his mother want Wilbur to go to the dentist? A. Wilbur’s tusk hurts. B. Wilbur’s foot hurts. C. Wilbur’s nose hurts.

WAY TO GO!!!

Good try, but a better answer would have been: Wilbur’s tusk hurts.

“My tusk only hurts when I crunch,” said Wilbur. “If I take off the shells, I can just slurp them.” “Have some seaweed,” said Mrs. Walrus. “It’s nice and soft.” “Ugh!” said Wilbur. “I don’t want to eat seaweed. It’s green and slimy.” “Then you’ll have to go to the dentist,” said Mrs. Walrus. “I don’t want to go to the dentist,” said Wilbur.

What were the Walrus’ eating? A. Seaweed B. McDonald’s C. Turtles

You did it!

Oh man!!! The correct answer is seaweed! Keep reading carefully!

Wilbur’s friends were tusk wrestling. Wilbur loved tusk wrestling. He locked tusks with his friend Walter. “Owww!” yelled Wilbur. “My tusk hurts!” “You’ll have to go to the dentist,” Walter said. “I don’t want to go to the dentist,” said Wilbur. “My tusk only hurts when I wrestle,” said Wilbur. “Let’s play on the ice slide with Wanda.” Wanda, Wilbur, and Walter swooped down the slide. SPLASH! They somersaulted into the sea. “That was great! Let’s do it again!” Walter said.

Do you think it would be cold in the Ocean during the winter? YES or NO

If you were in the Ocean during the winter, you would be SO COLD. The answer was YES. Click on the stars to see how cold the ocean is!!!! BRRRRR ***

Good job! You chose the correct answer.

Walter poked his tusks into the ice and pulled himself up onto the ice floe. Wanda poked her tusks into the ice and pulled herself up onto the ice floe. Wilbur poked his tusks into the ice and… “Owww!” yelled Wilbur. “My tusk hurts!” “You’ll have to go to the dentist,” Wanda said. “I don’t want to go to the dentist,” said Wilbur. “I’ll swim to Grandpa’s,” Wilbur said. “It’s easy to get our there. He’s got a landing slope,” It was a long way to Grandpa’s. Wilbur’s tusk hurt in the cold water. He pulled himself up Grandpa’s landing slop and lay there moaning.

Why do you think Wilbur’s tusk hurts? A. It doesn’t hurt him. B. He pulled his tusk out. C. Wilbur has a cavity.

If Wilbur’s tusk hurts a good prediction could be that he has a cavity! That’s why we go to the dentist to fix our teeth!

W O W

“Tsk-tsk,” said Grandpa. He put his flipper around Wilbur’s shoulders and helped him up onto the ice floe. “What is the matter?” “My tusk hurts,” Wilbur wailed. His whiskers quivered. “You’ll have to go to the dentist,” Grandpa said. “I don’t want to go to the dentist,” said Wilbur. Grandpa smiled. “Neither did I,” he said. Grandpa’s tooth was missing! Mrs. Walrus waddled up the landing slope toward them. “Walter and Wanda said I’d find you here,” she said. “Is your tusk still hurting?” “Yes,” said Wilbur. “I’ll have to go to the dentist!” “Finally!” said Mrs. Walrus.

Why do you think Wilbur finally decided to go to the dentist? B. The dentist called him and asked Wilbur to come. C. He saw his grandpa lost a tooth when he didn’t go to the dentist. A. His mother made him go because Wilbur wasn’t listening.

Eventually, Wilbur decided to do the right thing. He made the choice on his own with his Grandpa’s help by listening to his story. His Grandpa didn’t go to the dentist when he was Wilbur’s age and now he had a chipped tooth!

 Dr. Tusker, the dentist, was very gentle. “I see what the problem is,” she said. “You’ve got a piece of a shell stuck in the top of your tusk. There! I’ve taken it out.” “That feels much better!” said Wilbur.  “If you brush your tusks twice a day with this special fish-flavored toothpaste, your tusks will be strong and shiny,” said Dr. Tusker. She gave Wilbur a sticker. It said: “I brush my tusks.”

How many times did Dr. Tusker tell Wilbur to brush his tusks a day?

You read so carefully!!! Good for you!!!

“Wow!” said Grandpa. “I wish I had tusks like yours.” “Dr. Tusker will make you a false tusk,” said Wilbur. “You’ll have to go to the dentist.” “I don’t want to go to the dentist!” said Grandpa. “Tsk-tsk,” said Wilbur. He put his flipper around Grandpa’s shoulder. “If I can go to the dentist, so can you!”

Do you think Wilbur was happy he went to the dentist? YES NO

I am proud of you. Way to read a whole book!

Wilbur was happy he went to the dentist! His tusk doesn’t hurt anymore! Good trying, friend!!!!!!
