Why is sugar important? Sugar is a main component in proper functioning of the body. It provides the body with the energy required for cellular functions. It also helps improve the taste and texture of many different foods.

The Sugar Trade in Brazil  Brazil was the world's leading sugar exporter during the 17th century.  Sugar cane was first planted in Brazil in 1516  In 1996 about 70% of the world's sugar supply came from cane and the remainder from beets  Sugar trade was expected to increase in ,in Russia, China, and the U.S.

The Sugar Trade in Brazil Continued  World sugar production in reached a record 125 million tons as a result of increases in many nations and regions, including Mexico, the U.S., Central and South America, China, Africa, the Middle East and Pakistan  By the 16 th century a narrow strip of land was made and they built about 120 sugar mills in what had now became the richest European Colony  Slavery first started in Brazil and was the main growth of the sugar economy

The Sugar Trade in Brazil Continued  In the 1500s Portugal claimed Brazil and within 20 years had created a huge industry in Sugar  Brail would also produce sugar cane by fuel instead of the crop  large quantities of Brazilian sugar was sent to Europe at reasonable prices, which made the market grow bigger  The first Brazilian sugar plantation was first used in 1518

What is Brigadeiro? Brigadeiro is a simple Brazilian chocolate sugar candy, created in the 1940s and named after Brigadier Eduardo Gomes, whose shape is some what like chocolate truffles

About Brigadier Eduardo Gomes  Brigadier Eduardo Gomes was a politician and military figure. He was born in Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil  He was born September 20th 1896 and died June 13th 1981  He died at the age of 84  Gomes served in the Brazilian Air force  He served from 1918 to 1967

Brigadeiro Recipe INGREDIENTS: 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 1 tablespoon margarine 3 tablespoons cocoa powder chocolate sprinkles, to decorate

Brigadeiro Recipe Continued Directions: 1 PREPARE:. 2 Cook over medium-low heat, stir vigorously the sweetened condensed milk, margarine and cocoa powder. 3 Cook the mixture until it thickens enough to show the pan bottom during stirring. 4 Pour the mixture in a greased dish and let it cool to room temperature. Take small amounts of the mixture with a teaspoon and make 1 ½ inch balls. 5 Roll the balls over chocolate jimmies to decorate. 6 Hint: Grease your hands with margarine to make the balls easily. 7 If the balls don't hold the shape and flat down like coins, it means that you did not cook enough. Cook additional five minutes, take a small sample and dip it in a glass with cold water. If you cooked enough, this sample should hold the shape after cooling down in the water. 8 The cheapest, low grade sweetened condensed milk is the best to make the brigadeiro because they have more starch on them, which helps the candy to hold the shape. 9 In US, buy the sweet condensed milk from the Walmart brand "Great Value", cook this brand for 20 minutes in medium heat stirring continuously and your brigadeiro is with the right consistency.

Time to try Brigadeiro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
