The American Revolutionary War: Causes and Effects

Background: Growth of the Colonies 1607: Jamestown (Virginia) founded 1620’s: Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York colonies founded By 1733 there are 13 colonies: (Connecticut, Maryland, Rhode Island, Delaware, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New Jersey, South Carolina & Georgia)

Population Growth 1700: 250,000 people in colonies 1753: 1,333,000 people 1775: over 2 million

French & Indian War Cause: Both France and England want to own land in colonial America. – Indians are also tired of losing their land to the colonists and England Effect: England fights against the French and Indians for land ownership in America.

The French and Indian War Cause: England fights against the French and Indians for land ownership in America. Effect: Though England wins, it has spent a lot of money fighting the French and Indians Cause: King George III needs more money Effect: Colonies are taxed.

TAXATION Currency Act: 1764 Colonies can no longer put out their own money. England makes and controls all money. Sugar Act: 1764: Taxes are put on imported sugar, cloth, coffee, etc. Stamp Act: 1765 Colonist must pay money (a tax) every time they buy something printed on paper.

What do the colonists do about the taxes? 1765 Sons of Liberty form to protest the Stamp Act. – Patrick Henry speaks out against this tax 1766 King George III takes back the Stamp Act 1767 King passes Townshend Acts Tax on tea, paper, glass and other things.

What do the colonists do about the taxes? 1770: Boston Massacre: -English soldiers shoot at crowd of angry colonists, killing five. -England (the King) ends the Townshend Act, but keeps tax on tea.

What is the tea tax? Cause: England charged less for tea, but still charged a tax on it. Effect: Colonists & Sons of Liberty dump tea from three ships into the Boston Harbor.

What does the King do about the Boston Tea Party? 1774: The King passes the Intolerable Acts. -He closes the Boston harbor until the colonists pay him back for the lost tea. 1775: Patrick Henry speaks out against the Intolerable Acts. -The colonists form the First Continental Congress to protest against England.

Colonies grow 1754: French & Indian War King George III needs more money King passes Currency, Sugar and Stamp Act Sons of Liberty formed to fight Stamp Act King takes back Stamp Act, but adds Townshend Act 1770: Boston Massacre England takes back Townshend Act but keeps tax on tea. 1773: Boston Tea Party 1774: Intolerable Acts 1775: First Continental Congress protests against England The American Revolutionary War begins: Concord/Lexington
