Geography Objectives for the week: Evaluate the importance of teaching Geography Identify important Maps Skills and elements of a map. Apply 5 Themes of Geography and the Geography Standards to Unit and Lesson Planning. Define Human Geography

Transition from History to Geography Read story Add maps How does using the map help us understand the event? How could this lead to historical inquiry? History as a story --  History as a question! Now on to Geography….

Map Skills Colorado Map – Measure the distance between Fort Lewis and Falcon. – If you live in Punkin Center, how far are you from the nearest major hospital? – You’re lost in Mesa Verde National Park (you think). What human or natural landmarks could you look for to help orientate yourself? – You are in the city of Boulder and the hippies are driving you crazy! Luckily, you brought your compass. What direction should you escape if you want to get to Longmont? Class Discussion: Let’s go through each task, what prior knowledge or skills did you need to be able to answer each question? *Keep Maps out…we’ll use them again in a bit.

So, why is Geography Important to Teach? Practical Existential Intellectual Academic
