What do the following numbers have in common? 36, 25, 49, 9, 4, 16, 64, 81

These are all numbers you get as a result of squaring another number (multiplying it by itself). They are called perfect squares. What numbers can be multiplied by themselves to get the following numbers? 1) __ x __ = 49 2) __ x __ = 36 *This number that you multiplied by itself to produce a product (answer to a multiplication question) is the square root of that product. So the square root of 49 is _____ and the square root of 36 is_____

Square Roots A number that when squared equals the given number.

Practice Quiz yourself Practice with a game of tic-tac-toe

Challenge If you were asked to approximate the square root of 10 what would you do? Take a few minutes brainstorm with your group.

Challenge Response Use your knowledge that 3x3 gives you the perfect square 9, and 4x4 gives you the perfect square 16. The square root of 10 is then likely a decimal in the 3’s. You could approximate that the square root of 10 is 3.1

Activity Create a floor plan for a square space. You must tile your floor with a tile amount that amounts to a perfect square. Once complete write the perfect square beneath your plan as well as the square root. Additionally you must label the dimensions of your square and label the room!
