Lab 3 Intersystem conversion

 In a pharmaceutical or clinical setting, health care professionals encounter more than one system of measurement. Therefore, it becomes necessary to convert all quantities to the same system of measurement.

Conversion equivalents of volume UnitPractical pharmacy equivalent 1 mL ♏ 1 ♏ 0.06 mL 1 f Ʒ 3.69 mL 1 f ℥ mL 1 pt.473 mL 1 gal.3785 mL

Conversion equivalents of weight UnitPractical pharmacy equivalent 1 g gr 1 kg2.2 lb (avoir) 1 gr0.065 g 1 oz. (avoir)28.35 g 1 ℥ 31.1 g 1 lb (avoir)454 g 1 lb (apoth.)373 g

Conversion equivalents of length UnitPractical pharmacy equivalent 1 m39.37 in 1 in2.54 cm

Practice problems 1. Convert the following: a) 0.4 mL to minims b) 2.5 L to fluidounces c) f Ʒ iiss to mL d) O iiss to milliliters e) 12.5 g to grains f) 5 mg to gr g) 15 kg to pound aviordupois h) 6.2 gr to milligrams i) 176 lb (avoir) to kilograms j) 850 gr to g

Practice problems 2. Accupril ® tablets are available in strengths of 5 mg and 40 mg of the drug quinapril HCl. Express these strengths in grains. 3. Daypro ®, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent, has a maximum daily dose requirement of 26 mg/kg/day. What is the maximum number of Daypro ® 600 mg tablets that can be given to a 127-lb patient? 4. Tylenol with codeine ® elixir contains 12 mg of codeine per 5 mL of the elixir. If a pharmacist dispenses 4 fluidounces of the elixir to a patient, how many grains of codeine does the patient receive?

Practice problems 5. If a mixture of powders weighing 30 g. is divided into 100 dosage units, how many grains will each dosage unit weight? 6. A mercury barometer reads 760 mm. express this pressure in inches. 7. If a physician prescribes 1 ½ grains of phenobarbital sodium from the Eli Lilly Company, how many grams of drug would it contain? 8. A Carafate ® tablet contains 1 g of sucralfate. How many ounces of sucralfate would be present in ten Carafate ® tablets?

Home work 1. The dose of a drug is 1/10 gr pre kg of body weight. How many milligrams should be givento a person weighing 154lb? 2. A formula for cough syrup contains 1/8 gr. Of codeine phosphate per f Ʒ. How many grams of codeine phosphate should be used in preparing one pint of the cough syrup? 3. If a quart of suspension contains 2 g of a drug, how many grains would be present in a gallon of the suspension?
