Quaestio: How did the Church of England differ from other Protestant sects? Nunc Agenda: Work in partners to answer the questions on your sheet using the two charts.

Nunc Agenda Martin Luther VS Henry VIII

At first, King Henry VIII loves the Catholic Church and hates Protestantism

Henry is married to Catherine of Aragon, cousin of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V

But she only bore him a daughter, Mary, and no son!

Plus, Henry already has a crush on Anne Boleyn, and wants to marry her so he can have a son, but divorce is forbidden by the Church

So Henry VIII asks the Pope in Rome to “annul” his first marriage, which the Pope sometimes did for Kings, but Pope said NO WAY! (Why?)

So Henry VIII called on Parliament to pass laws splitting England from the Catholic Church and making HENRY head of the Church of England

…and then Henry and Anne lived happily ever…

…Actually, Anne Boleyn also bore him a daughter, Elizabeth, so he had Anne Boleyn beheaded so he could marry a third wife, Jane Seymour

Jane was smart enough to have a son, Edward. He had three more wives after her, but no more kids.

Since the Church of England broke away for secular reasons, they kept most Catholic practices

But when Henry died, 9 year old Edward became King, and until he died at 15, moved the Church much farther into Protestant ideas

But then Edward died and his sister Mary took over, and switched everything back to Catholicism. Hundreds of Protestants were burned at the stake, which is why she was called “Bloody Mary.”

But when Mary died, Elizabeth became Queen and established a compromise between Protestant and Catholic practices called the Elizabethan Settlement

Classwork : Examine the documents relating to Henry’s change in religious ideology and answer the questions. Think about his motives behind these changes.
