Ethics in the Curriculum

A step between secondary school and university: "Cégep" is a French acronym that stands for Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel, known in English as a general and vocational college. The diploma awarded by Cégeps is the DCS – Diploma of college studies. A particular feature of Cégep is the co-existence of pre- university programs, leading to university studies, and technical career programs. WHAT ARE CEGEPS?

Dawson College was the first English-language institution in the Quebec network of CEGEPs when it opened its doors to 1,200 students in the fall of The College is named for Sir William Dawson, a geologist and the first McGill University principal from 1855 to DAWSON COLLEGE Sir John William Dawson was the first Canadian scientist with a worldwide reputation (courtesy Library and Archives Canada/C-49822)

The Cégep school year in split into two semesters. Pre-University Programs are two years (4 semesters) long. Social Science, Pure & Applied Science, Health Science, Creative Arts Languages and Literature, Liberal Arts, Visual Arts. Career/Technical Programs are three years (6 semesters) long. 3D Animation and Computer Generated Imagery, Graphic Design Biomedical Laboratory Technology, Nursing, Diagnostic Imaging, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Accounting and Management, Social Service, Community Recreation Leadership Training, Computer Science Technology. 2 YEAR PRE-UNIVERSITY/3 YEAR CAREER OR TECHNICAL

Programs of studies leading to the Diploma of College Studies (DCS) include two main components: General education component (14 courses) Specific program component (12 to 15 program related courses in the field of concentration. GENERAL EDUCATION COMPONENT

Three educational aims define the general education component of the programs. 1. Educate the student to live responsibly within society. 2. Help the student integrate cultural knowledge into their studies. 3. Help the student to master language as a tool for thought, communication and openness to the world. EDUCATIONAL AIMS

The general education profile illustrates both the specific and complementary nature of the general education disciplines, which are: English, Language of Instruction and Literature (4) French as a second language (2) Humanities (3) Physical Education (3) Complimentary courses chosen from outside the field of concentration (2) PROFILE OF COURSES

The program is designed to teach ethics within the social sciences, specifically in humanities. Humanities is intended to promote personal and social development and to give students a foundation that will help them understand their roles in society as members of the work force, citizens and individuals. HOW ETHICS IS INTEGRATED INTO THE CURRICULUM

Expected Outcomes: 1. To apply a logical analytical process to how knowledge is organized and used. 2. To apply a critical thought process to world views. 3. To apply a critical thought process to ethical issues relevant to the field of study. 4. To consolidate personal and social values. HUMANITIES
