Choose the best answer: How long did John sleep if he went to bed at 9:40 P.M., and got up at 7:20 A.M.? Caterra is making brownies. They need to bake for 47 minutes. She put them in the oven at 6:30 P.M. At what time should she take them out?

Round each number to the nearest 10:

BRAIN TEASERS: Nadine, Pauline, and Raelene ride their bicycles to the library. Each girl has her own lock. Nadine locks her bike to the bike rack and to Pauline’s bike. Pauline locks her bike to the rack and to Raelene’s bike. Raelene locks her bike to the rack and to both Nadine’s and Pauline’s bikes. The three friends know their bicycles are very safe. Each bike is locked with at least two locks. At the library, however, Nadine loses the key to her lock! With the two keys they have, the girls can unlock only one of the bicycles. Whose bicycle is it?

ANSWER Raelene’s bicycle is the only one that can be unlocked. Nadine’s lock locks both Nadine’s and Pauline’s bikes. Therefore, without Nadine’s key, both Nadine’s and Pauline’s bikes are stuck to the rack. But the girls do have the keys to both of the locks locking Raelene’s bike

Question For their fall book reports, Brooke, Carla, Tony, and Nadine each read 4 of the books shown above. Their teacher told them that each book had to be from a different category. Nobody read the same combination of books. All four students read a mystery, but Brooke and Tony both read the longer mystery. Everyone except Tony read a book from a series. Nadine was the only one to read the longer of the two choices. Tony and Carla read the longest book. Nadine read the biography and the classic that no one else read. Carla did not read a biography. Brooke read the longer historical fiction but the shorter biography. Tony and Carla read the shorter historical-fiction book. How many pages did each person read ?

ANSWER: Hooked on Books Solution Brooke: 548 pages Carla: 565 pages Tony: 648 pages Nadine: 605 pages Explanation

Mrs. Ortiz made a batch of cookies for Carlos, Maria, Tina, and Joe. The children shared the cookies equally and finished them all right away. Then Mrs. Ortiz made another batch of cookies, twice as big as the first. When she took the cookies off the cookie sheet, 6 of them crumbled, so she didn't serve them to the children. She gave the children the rest of the cookies. Just then, Mr. Ortiz came home and ate 2 cookies from the children's tray. Each of the children ate 3 more cookies along with a glass of milk. They were stuffed, so they decided to leave the last 4 cookies on the tray. How many cookies were in the first batch? How many cookies did each of the children eat?

ANSWER Cookies Crumble Solution There were 12 cookies in the first batch. Each of the children ate 6 cookies in all (3 from each batch). Explanation Work backward. At the end, there were 4 cookies left on the tray. Each of the children ate 3 cookies from the second batch. 4 x 3 = 12 Add the 12 cookies they ate to the 4 cookies left on the tray. 12 cookies + 4 cookies = 16 cookies Mr. Ortiz ate 2 cookies. Add: = 18 6 cookies crumbled. Add: = 24 There were 24 cookies in the second batch. The second batch was twice as big as the first batch: 24 ÷ 2 = 12 There were 12 cookies in the first batch. To find the number of cookies each child ate in the first batch: Divide 12 cookies by 4 children. Each child ate 3 cookies. 3 cookies from the first batch + 3 cookies from the second batch = 6 cookies for each child.
