COMPLIANCE TRIVIA Ocean State University men's tennis team will still be in their season when summer school starts next week. The coaches would like to move practice from 4pm to 10am during the week. NCAA Bylaw states that it is not permissible for a student-athlete to miss class during the academic year for practice activities except when traveling to an away from home contest and the practice is in conjunction with the contest. Can a student-athlete miss class during summer school to participate in practice?

TRIVIA ANSWER: No. NCAA Staff Interpretation- 6/11/10- Missed Class Time for Practice Activities (I)- states that a student-athlete may not miss class at any time (e.g., regular academic term, mini term, summer term) for practice activities, except when a team is traveling to an away-from- home contest and the practice is in conjunction with the contest.

Student-Athlete Reinstatement/Secondary Case Facts: Assistant women's basketball coach arranged for a women's basketball student-athlete to purchase four tickets at face value to a football game October 11, Specifically, assistant coach sold four tickets to a regularly scheduled football game to SA. SA paid the coach face value ($35) for each ticket. The game was not sold out and SA could have purchased the tickets at the regular ticket window. Violation was discovered when the women's basketball staff contacted the compliance staff to inquire whether the activity constituted a violation. At that time, the coach returned the money to the institution. Institution Action: Institution required SA to make a donation to a charity of her choice in the amount she paid to the coach for the tickets. In addition, institution issued a letter of admonishment to assistant coach and will provide a rules education session to the women's basketball staff regarding applicable legislation. Eligibility Action: Eligibility reinstated based on institution's action requiring SA to donate the value of tickets to a charity of her choice.

 Please remember the only way a student athlete may receive a ticket to a home sporting event is one of the following: 1)Through the student lottery. 2)As a host for a recruit during an official or unofficial visits. 3)Buy a ticket from the ticket office. Coaches cannot give their own tickets or tickets that they purchase to their players. Student-Athlete Recent Violations

Contact and Conditioning Activities Outside of thePlaying Season (I) Date Published: March 23, 2012 Type: Staff Interpretation Interpretation: The academic and membership affairs staff determined that required conditioning activities outside the playing season may not include contact-related drills or activities (e.g., wrestling, combative activities, blocking drills). Further, the staff determined that the use of training or resistance sleds in required conditioning activities is permissible, provided such equipment is not related to the sport (e.g., blocking sleds in football).

Quick Reminders Last practice for teams NOT in championship segment is Friday, April 27 th (4/27/12). Outside the Playing Season (Championship & Non-Championship Segments) ▫Sports other than BA & FTB - As of April 15 th not more than 4 student-athletes may participate in skill-related instruction with a coach at any one time in any facility.

Questions? Thank you!
