Common-Sense Questions a Church- of-Christ Preacher Cannot Answer Final lesson Answered all questions from the Scriptures Two left for which I am willing to supply Scriptural answers Simple Answers Lesson #5

Question 12 Martin’s Unanswerable Questions If salvation is not by works of righteousness which we have done, and baptism is a work of "righteousness," then how can water baptism be a part of salvation? (Titus 3:5; Matt. 3:16) In the Bible, we are SAVED BY GRACE, and grace does not involve human effort or merit - grace is grace and work is work! (Just read Ephesians 2:8,9 and Romans 11:6.)

Titus 3:5 Not ByBut By works of right- eousness we have done “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.” The verse is not discussing righteous works that God commands of us! It’s discussing their own “righteousness” (cf. Rom. 10:3; 2 Tim. 1:9; contrast Rom. 10:4, 10)!

Titus 3:5 Not ByBut By washing renewing H.S. works of right- eousness we have done “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.”

Mr. Martin Believes God’s Mercy is NOT Worked Through Baptism If salvation is “not by works of righteousness which we have done,” and baptism is a work of righteousness, then how can water baptism be a part of salvation?” (Titus 3:5; Matthew 3:16)

The Apostle Paul Believed God’s Mercy Was Worked Through Baptism! Not ByBut By washing renewing H.S. works of right- eousness we have done Ephesians 5:26 “That He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,” Titus 3:5 “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,”

The Apostle Paul’s Sins Were Washed Away in Baptism! Not ByBut By washing renewing H.S. works of right- eousness we have done “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” (Acts 22:16)

Jesus Ordained That to Enter the Kingdom, One Must Be Born of Water and the Spirit! “Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’ Nicodemus said to Him, ‘How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?’ Jesus answered, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.’” (John 3:3-5)

Mr. Martin Forgets Faith “In the Bible, we are SAVED BY GRACE, and grace does not involve human effort or merit - grace is grace and work is work! (Just read Ephesians 2:8,9 and Romans 11:6.)”

We Are Saved By Grace Through Faith! “ For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8,9) –As we are saved according to mercy through washing of regeneration (Titus 3:5), –So we are saved by grace (includes mercy) through faith (includes baptism).

Ephesians Was Written to Christians in Ephesus The Ephesians were saved by grace through faith. They: –Heard (Ephesians 1:13) –Believed (Ephesians 1:13) –Were raised in baptism (Ephesians 2:4-6; cf. Acts 19:5; Ephesians 5:26; Colossians 2:12) No matter where Martin goes, he cannot separate baptism from God’s plan of salvation!

Romans 11:6 “And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.” –Martin has to prove that baptism is a work and not of grace I have verified that baptism is a work in grace. –He assumes what he needs to prove!

Romans 11:6 “And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.” –The Romans were saved by grace when they were baptized into the gracious death of Christ (Romans 6:3,4). “Works” in v. 6 does not pertain to works of faith. Wherever Martin goes, he cannot separate baptism from God’s gracious plan of salvation!

Works of Righteousness God-Ordained Works of Righteousness Man-Ordained Works of Righteousness “Then Peter opened his mouth and said: ‘In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.’” (Acts 10:34,35, cf. John 6:29) “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.” (Titus 3:5)

Question 13 Martin’s Unanswerable Questions The "Church of Christ" teaches that "obeying the Gospel" includes being baptized in water in order to be saved. If this is true, then how is it that the converts of Acts 10 were saved by faith before and without water baptism? The Bible says in Acts 5:32 that only those who obey God may receive the Holy Ghost - so what did those in Acts 10 do to obey and receive the Holy Ghost and be saved? In the light of Acts 10:34-48, Acts 11:14-18, and Acts 15:7-11, how can anyone honestly believe that water baptism is necessary to salvation? Simon Peter said their hearts were "purified by faith" (Acts 15:9) and that we are saved by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ like they were (Acts 15:11)...

Question 13 Martin’s Unanswerable Questions...that is, before and without water baptism! We know that unsaved people do not receive or have the Holy Spirit (John 14:17; Romans 8:9). We know that the Holy Spirit is given only to those who have believed on Christ (John 7:39). We know that the Holy Spirit seals the believing sinner the moment he puts his faith and trust in Christ as Savior, before he is ever baptized in water (Ephesians 1:12,13). How does the warped theology of Campbellism explain away these clear passages of Scripture without "muddying the waters" of truth and drowning its members in eternal damnation?

RECEIVE HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM? Why did the household of Cornelius …

Holy Spirit Baptism Was given to the apostles in Acts 2:1-4. Not to save them –They were already clean (John 15:3). –They were already branches (John 15:5). To fulfill Old Testament prophecy (Acts 2:16). So they would be able to prophesy/speak in tongues (Acts 2:4,18). To open the door for all of Israel –granting them the privilege of “calling on the name of the Lord” and coming into Christ’s church/body when they obeyed the gospel (Acts 2:21,38,47).

THAT HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM SAVED ANYONE FROM SIN? Why should we assume

Holy Spirit Baptism Given to the Household of Cornelius in Acts 10. –Not for the purpose of saving them. They had heard only the beginning of the message (Acts 11:15; cf. Romans 10:17). –To enable them to tongue-speak (Acts 10:46). –To open the door to salvation for all Gentiles. Granting them the privilege of “calling on the name of the Lord” and, upon obeying the gospel, coming into the church/body of Christ (Acts 11:18; 10:47,48)

THE HOUSEHOLD OF CORNELIUS SAVED? How Was

ANSWER: “SAME MANNER” “But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we shall be saved in the same manner as they.” (Acts 15:11)

Jews and Gentiles Jews saved after: Hearing words (Acts 2:14, 22, 40) Believing (Acts 2:44) –Confession implied (Romans 10:10) Repenting (Acts 2:38) Being baptized in the name of the Lord (Acts 2:38,41) Gentiles saved after: Hearing words (Acts 10:5,6;11:13,14) Believing (Acts 10:43) –confession implied (Romans 10:10) Repenting (Acts 11:18) Being baptized in the name of the Lord (Acts 10:48)

“We know that unsaved people do not receive or have the Holy Spirit (John 14:17; Romans 8:9).” ACTUALLY The “unsaved” received the Holy Spirit to PROPHESY: Saul (1 Samuel 19:18-24) Balaam (Numbers 24:1,2;23:3;Joshua 13:22) Donkey (Numbers 22:28) Caiaphas (John 11:49-52)

Cannot produce one New- Testament example that shows a person being saved apart from baptism (After Christ’s ascension!) Martin and Baptists Yet, in their preaching and teaching, they willingly leave out the “BAPTISM” piece of the salvation puzzle!

“Who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 3:20, 21
