SCIENCE 1 st Nine Weeks

What is Science? …. Science is the discovery of everything around us.

Who is a Scientist? …. Are you a Scientist? What can you do to become a Scientist?

Are there different types of Scientists?

Why do Scientists work together to solve problems?

You are going to work with a partner to discover how Scientists collect information.

You will make a Science Notebook to record the information you discover. SCIENCE

STOP

What are your 5 senses?

What job do your eyes do? Why are your eyes so important?

Use your eyes to make an observation about our classroom. Use your eyes to make an observation about a classmate.

What can you see with your eyes that is near? What Science tool can you use to help you see things that are tiny?

You can use a hand lens or a magnifying glass. You can look at little things that are near.

You can use a microscope to look at things that are tiny.

What can you see with your eyes that is far away? What Science tool can you use to see things that are far away?

You can use binoculars to see things that are far away. You can see birds in the trees.

You can use a telescope to see things that are far away. You can look at the stars, the moon, and the planets.

Which of our senses do we use for SIGHT? OUR EYES

Our eyes are very sensitive. What can we use to protect our eyes? What do Scientist use to protect their eyes?

We can protect our eyes with glasses or goggles or a protective face screen.

STOP

What are your 5 senses?

What job does your skin do? Why is your skin important?

Use your skin to make an observation about water.

Water can be cold or hot. Water can be frozen or turned into steam.

When we tell how hot or cold something is we are telling the TEMPERATURE of that object. We use a thermometer to find TEMPERATURE.

Which of our senses do we use for touch? OUR SKIN

Your fingers, your hands, your feet and all of the skin on your body is used for the sense of touch.

Our skin is very sensitive. What tools do we use to protect our skin? What tools do Scientists use to protect their skin?

We use gloves to protect our skin from hot and cold. What other tools do you see?

Scientists also wear special clothing to protect their skin.

STOP

What are your 5 senses?

What job does your nose do?

Why is your nose important? Make an observation about lunch today using your nose?

Things can smell good or bad. Our nose helps us decide if something is good to eat. If it smells bad it is bad!

Which of our senses do we use for smell? OUR NOSE

STOP

What are your 5 senses?

What job does your mouth do?

Why is your mouth important?

But our mouth is not just our lips. Our mouth includes: OUR TEETH

Our mouth includes: OUR TONGUE

We can tell if foods are SALTY SWEET SOUR BITTER because of our tongue.

Which of our senses do we use for taste? OUR MOUTH and TONGUE

STOP

What are your 5 senses?

What job do your ears do?

Why do we need our ears?

What if you can’t hear? What tools can you use to help you hear better?

Sounds that you hear can be LOUD or soft.

Close your eyes. What sounds can you hear?

Which of our senses do we use for hearing? OUR EARS

STOP

What are your 5 senses?

OUR EYES OUR SKIN OUR NOSE OUR LIPS OUR EARS

We are Scientists. We use our senses to learn about our world.
