WHAT IS THE VALUE OF RESIDENCY PROGRAMS?  Future physicians to practice in community:  Anticipated physician shortage particularly severe in rural and medically underserved areas.  National shortage of 50,000 physicians by 2010 and 100,000 by 2020  Physicians are more likely to remain in the area where they train. 4/24/09 Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine 5
