Aerospace Legends Civil Air Patrol Colorado Wing Boulder Composite Squadron Jim Garrard, 2 nd Lt. Aerospace Education Officer 01 February 2007

Aerospace Education Mandate As part of our Aerospace Education mandate for the Civil Air Patrol, I would like to present programs about individual leaders in aerospace with a particular focus on the named cadet achievements and awards. The best presentations are made by people who have a passion for their subject and that just might be you!

Aerospace Legends Presentations So, who’s your favorite aerospace legend? How would you like to share your enthusiasm for your favorite aerospace legend with the rest of the squadron - seniors and cadets alike? If so, please consider putting together a presentation between twenty minutes and an hour long. It doesn’t have to be formal or even use slides like these and it can even be a “hands-on” demonstration if you like. You’ll “get the floor” to pass on your knowledge of our aerospace legends to the rest of us.

CAP Aerospace Legends CAP Cadet Achievement Levels and Awards John CurryCAP’s first national commander Hap ArnoldLeader of US military airpower in WWII Mary FeikPioneer in aviation mechanics Orville & Wilbur WrightFirst powered, controlled, heavier-than-air flight Eddie RickenbackerAmerica’s first “Ace of Aces” Charles LindbergFirst non-stop, solo flight across the Atlantic Jimmy DoolittleEngineer, pilot, and Medal of Honor recipient Robert Goddard“Father of Modern Rocketry” Neil ArmstrongFirst man to set foot on the Moon Billy MitchellChampion of the military capabilities of airpower Amelia EarhartFirst woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ira EakerWWII military aviation leader Carl SpaatzFirst Chief of Staff of the USAF

Additional Aerospace Legends There are many other individuals who were instrumental in our aerospace development. Could we have set foot on the Moon by 1969 without, for instance, Wiley Post’s work on pressurization in 1934? I could spend all day, and miss the meeting tonight, thinking about all the people we could cover so I’ll leave that to you but here are a few to get you thinking: –A. Scott Crossfield- Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager –Frank G. Brewer- Sally Ride –Otto Lilienthal- Burt Rutan –Glenn Curtiss- Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. –Many others at Aviation Week & Space Technologies top 100 stars of aerospace ( Note: Links or references to individuals or companies does not constitute an endorsement of any information, product or service you may receive from such sources.

What to Do Pick a name from the list or someone else from our aerospace past or present and share your enthusiasm for that person with the rest of us. If you don’t already have a favorite legend but would still like to do a short presentation, ask me – I’ve got a whole list of names from which to choose. We generally do our Aerospace Education stuff at the first Thursday of the month meeting and we can start these presentations anytime. Please let me know if you would like to do one of these and on whom. Let’s have some fun with this and learn about our aerospace legends in the process!
