ARE YOU SURE?! Let’s review our study to this point. Circle the option that best completes the statement. We believe that the Bible… 1.Is partly inspired by God but contains some mistakes. 2.Is just a good book, and its stories help us to know how to live. 3.Has every word inspired by God, contains no mistakes, and tells us exactly how to live.

ARE YOU SURE?! Let’s review our study to this point. Circle the option that best completes the statement. We believe that God… 1.Is a Trinity, with three persons in one – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. 2.Is three different persons; that God the Father is in every way greater than God the Son, and the Son is in every way greater than the Holy Spirit. 3.Is one Person, Jesus, who sometimes acts as the Father, sometimes as the Son, and sometimes as the Holy Spirit.

ARE YOU SURE?! Let’s review our study to this point. Circle the option that best completes the statement. STATEMENT OF FAITH We believe all Christians are entitled to and should seek the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues according to Acts 2:4. This experience gives a Christian power to witness by his life and words.

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! At the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, what did John the Baptist say that Jesus would do (Matt. 3:11)?

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! At the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, what did John the Baptist say that Jesus would do (Matt. 3:11)? “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! While teaching His disciples in the Upper Room, what did Jesus tell His disciples He would do for them (John 16:7)?

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! While teaching His disciples in the Upper Room, what did Jesus tell His disciples He would do for them (John 16:7)? He promised to send them the Holy Spirit!

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! On Resurrection evening, the very day our Lord was raised from the dead, what did Jesus do for His disciples (John 20:19-22)?

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! On Resurrection evening, the very day our Lord was raised from the dead, what did Jesus do for His disciples (John 20:19-22)? He gave them the Holy Spirit!

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! Forty days later, just prior to His ascension, Jesus told His disciples to do something. What did He tell them to do (Luke 24:46-49)?

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! Forty days later, just prior to His ascension, Jesus told His disciples to do something. What did He tell them to do (Luke 24:46-49)? To wait for the promise of the Father that would clothe them in power.

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! Notice that the disciples already had received the Holy Spirit (in John 20), and were then told to wait for something else (in Luke 24). That “something else” was the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! Luke 24 goes right into Acts 1. In Acts 1:4,5,8, what does Jesus tell His disciples to do? Why?

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! Luke 24 goes right into Acts 1. In Acts 1:4,5,8, what does Jesus tell His disciples to do? Why? He tells them to wait for the promise of the Father, the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The reason they needed to wait is that they needed to be clothed in power.

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! What Jesus said in Acts 1 actually happened in Acts 2:1-4. Describe what took place.

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! What Jesus said in Acts 1 actually happened in Acts 2:1-4. Describe what took place. The Holy Spirit Baptism was indeed a baptism in fire and power, evidenced by speaking in other tongues.

LET’S ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION! Note: John the Baptist predicted it (Matt. 3), Jesus promised it (Luke 24 and Acts 1), and the believers received it … the Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2). The Book of Acts unfolds the story of a church full of the Holy Spirit who ministered in the power of the Spirit. They were a church indwelt, filled, and baptized with the Holy Spirit … a vigorous and vibrant church.

CLARIFICATION OF TERMS INDWELT BY THE SPIRIT

CLARIFICATION OF TERMS INDWELT BY THE SPIRIT The Holy Spirit who indwells us makes us a child of God. I Cor. 6:19; Rom. 8:9,11. Enoikountos = indwelling; oikos = house.

CLARIFICATION OF TERMS FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT

CLARIFICATION OF TERMS FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT The Holy Spirit who fills us seeks to control us and make us like Christ. Eph. 5:18. Plēróō = to control

CLARIFICATION OF TERMS BAPTIZED IN THE SPIRIT

CLARIFICATION OF TERMS BAPTIZED IN THE SPIRIT The Holy Spirit whMo we’re baptized in imbues us with power for witness and testimony. Acts 1:8.

OTHER CLARIFICATIONS Not all biblical authors speak about the Holy Spirit in the same way. We will look at: Luke John Paul

OTHER CLARIFICATIONS LUKE AND THE HOLY SPIRIT Luke has a number of agendas in Luke-Acts. -Gives a place of value to women. -Shows many examples of Jesus and the Apostles praying. -Depicts the role of the Holy Spirit in providing power for witness and proclamation. Almost every time the Holy Spirit is mentioned, we see some sort of inspired utterance following.

OTHER CLARIFICATIONS LUKE AND THE HOLY SPIRIT Luke has a number of agendas in Luke-Acts. -Don’t do life, witness or ministry without the Holy Spirit. -Wait on the Holy Spirit. Long for the Holy Spirit. Pursue him. Follow him. Hunger for him (Luke 24, Acts 1). -It seems Luke focuses on what the Holy Spirit does THROUGH us to reach others.

OTHER CLARIFICATIONS JOHN AND THE HOLY SPIRIT The Apostle John emphasized the Holy Spirit’s role in regeneration…new birth. Some have noted how he starts John 1 similarly to Genesis 1. John 3 – “born again” John 20 – “He breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’” (Like God breathed life into Adam?)

OTHER CLARIFICATIONS JOHN AND THE HOLY SPIRIT Last Supper Discourse of Jesus: Holy Spirit is most active in the believer when the believer is in a place of abiding (John 15). Holy Spirit guides, comforts, leads, teaches the believer. He reveals the Father and more about Jesus to the believer. He is intimately involved with the believer’s life if allowed.

OTHER CLARIFICATIONS JOHN AND THE HOLY SPIRIT Last Supper Discourse of Jesus: Holy Spirit is active not just in the life of the believer, but in the world as well. He convicts it of sin righteousness and judgment. Interestingly, John’s revelation adds that the Holy Spirit encourages, rebukes, reproves, disciplines, calls to repentance, and more. We are to listen to what the Spirit is saying to the church.

OTHER CLARIFICATIONS JOHN AND THE HOLY SPIRIT It seems that John focuses both on what the Holy Spirit does IN us as well as THROUGH us.

OTHER CLARIFICATIONS PAUL AND THE HOLY SPIRIT Paul talks about the Holy Spirit functioning in many roles. Two words that might summarize his focus: What the Holy Spirit can do WITH us when we are in Partnership and Surrender. -Often contrast living by the Spirit with living by the flesh, being led by the Spirit and being led by the flesh. -Yielding to the Holy Spirit produces godly fruit (Gal. 5) and spiritual gifts (1 Cor ).

OTHER CLARIFICATIONS PAUL AND THE HOLY SPIRIT Paul loves to speak of the Holy Spirit’s ontological role in our salvation and identity. -Spirit of adoption, sonship, making us part of God’s family. (Romans 8) -Seal and guarantee of our salvation and inheritance. (Ephesians 1) -We are temples of the Holy Spirit.

CAUTION NEVER REDUCE THE HOLY SPIRIT TO A DOCTRINE Remember, the baptism in the Holy Spirit is not the beginning and end all. God is more concerned with people living their daily lives in constant partnership with and surrender to the Holy Spirit than he is with them having a “BHS” one-time experience. God loves when we “wait in Jerusalem” for his power to live. (Acts 2 and 4)
