Road Show Magic Feedback This presentation takes you through the 8 messages delivered by the Road Show Additional supporting material can be found at

School Magic uses road sign shapes to emphasise the type of message being delivered, there were eight messages delivered in the presentation.

Discussion Points When is the right age to ride on a road with a cycle? What training can you get before you start to ride on roads? Why is it important to wear a cycle helmet? Do cyclist have to obey the rules of the road? Where are safe places to learn to ride a bike? What magic did we see that related to this sign? Billy Acord – This is a story about Billy who had an accident when cycling. This is the trick from the Road Show that you can learn and show your friends. Both traffic light tricks – Cyclist need to be aware of traffic lights and their meanings.

What magic did we see that related to this sign? Arthur the footballer – This is a story about Arthur and his accident. Was it because he had a dark jumper on, did this help, or was it because he just run across the road without looking or thinking? Magic Washing – Wearing something bright does not mean you have to wear fluorescent clothing you can wear reflective tags or armbands as well as a scarf or hat. Next time you buy a school bag buy a bright one that can be seen at night. Discussion Points Why is it important to be seen at night? Do you have to dress in florescent bibs to be seen? What simple things can you do to be seen at night?

What magic did we see that related to this sign? Unequal Ropes – This is a story about Isabel who cut up her skipping rope to remember the safe way to cross the road. Know your crossings – Crossings are the safest places to cross the road. Traffic Light surprise – Traffic lights and crossings are by far the safest places to cross the road. Discussion Points Why is it important to always remember to Stop, Look, Listen and Think before you cross a road? Why do you think children are more at risk than adults when crossing roads? What influence does playing music or talking on phones have to the number of children killed or injured on our roads?

Know your Crossings– This trick showed that each type of crossing is named after an animal. Different crossings work in different ways you should get to know how different crossings work and how you can best use them. Lollipop Lady – The school Crossing Patrol person runs your school crossing you should always do as they say. When they are not there they are usually replaced by a policeman who then runs the crossing. Unequal Ropes – This is a reminder to still Stop, Look, Listen and Think even on crossings. Cars do not always obey traffic lights or the rules of the road, and that’s when accidents occur. Discussion Points Where are the safest places to cross the road? Is it safe to cross at a Pelican crossing when the man is RED?

What magic did we see that related to this sign? Arthur the footballer – Did Arthur fins a safe place to cross? Unequal Ropes – Can you remember the rules of how to cross the road without cutting up your skipping rope? Lollipop Lady – School crossing are probably the safest places to cross the road if you obey the person running the crossing. Both Traffic Lights – Traffic lights and crossings are by far the safest places to cross the road. Discussion Points Why is it important to be able to see traffic when crossing the road? Why should you never cross the road between closely parked cars? If you cannot see the cars using the road when you cross, can they see you?

What magic did we see that related to this sign? Granny’s Car – This is a story about granny. The most important part of this trick was when granny's car disappeared and the statistics of the number of children killed or injured on our roads last year were shown. Discussion Points Why is it dangerous to fool around on roads? Why is it important to behave in a sensible way on public transport? Is it good to put your feet on the seats of busses or trains? Why should you not cause a nuisance on public transport? What can happen if you make yourself a nuisance on a bus?

What magic did we see that related to this sign? Lollipop Lady – If you walk to school, always use the school crossing or other crossings to cross roads. Unequal Ropes – Be aware of the rules of how to cross a road safely Know your Crossings– Remember different types of crossings work in different ways always obey the instructions given at crossings. Discussion Points Why is walking a good form of exercise? Is travelling to school by car good for the environment? Is it healthier to walk short distances than travelling by car? Who travels to school by car but feels they could walk?

What magic did we see that related to this sign? Granny’s Car – Here you have the real numbers for accidents in the London area for last year. By taking part in the Road Show and remembering the messages your have seen today you can avoid being one of those statistics. Discussion Points Who are the most vulnerable group of people on our roads? Accidents happen quickly, how can you avoid being a statistic? How many children are killed or seriously injured in road accidents last year?

Finally It is important to remember the eight messages we have learned from the Road Show. The information in the discussions can be found in the information on Road Safety and Sustainability on the web site.
