Vitamin E Dr.s.chakravarty md
Vitamin E: Lipid soluble antioxidant in cell membranes and lipoproteins of plasma. Tocopherols and Tocotrienols Acts synergistically with Vit C and selenium (present in glutathione peroxidase) for reducing amount of free radical generation in membrane. Most active form D-α Tocopherol . Source – vegetable oils such as wheat germ oil, safflower and sunflower oils.
Antioxidant effect of Vit E, C and Se
Functions of Vit E: Stops the chain reaction of free radicals Protection of polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin A Protects the oxidation of LDLs – prevents atherosclerosis But trials so far remain inconclusive . Prevents hemolysis of RBCs Used in hemolytic anaemia
Additional benefits: Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer disease – decreased free radical production Nocturnal leg cramps and Intermittent claudication – decreased smooth muscle proliferation. Retrolental fibroplasia and bronchopulmonary dysplasia – decreased free radical generation from 100% oxygen.
LESS vit E: Hemolytic anemia Increased risk of stroke and IHD Spinocerebellar ataxia Myopathy and neuropathy
