DACH-3/5/7 AMERICA’S ARMY: THE STRENGTH OF THE NATION OUR HISTORICAL LEGACY: PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE DACH-37/TR AS OF: 17 SEP 2013 “FOR GOD AND COUNTRY” CHIEF OF CHAPLAIN’S QUARTERLY TRAINING 1 ST QUARTER, FY14 (OCT-DEC 2013) Theme: Our Historical Legacy: Preparing for the Future* Topic: Faith in God Builds Strong Moral Character Introduction: Discover how Chaplain Kapaun inspired others to give and be their best. Terminal Learning Objective: ACTION: Demonstrate that you understand how Chaplain Kapaun strengthened the faith of others to build their character. CONDITION: Access to a computer with internet access. STANDARD: Identify three insights from Chaplain Kapaun’s ministry and give an example for how this works in your service to Soldiers. Presentation: Introduction/Ice Breaker. Display the slide, “Kapaun Legacy Encourages SERE Students” (next slide). Display this on Powerpoint or print off a copy or copies to pass around. Leading questions: Why would Chaplain Kapaun’s legacy be the subject of a class at the Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) school? Feel free to substitute this with other ice breakers, videos, etc. 2.Note: Trainers who register on the following DVIDS site can download videos. Watch the following videos: a. Go to the website: (segment at: The segment title is “Father Emil Kapaun: Leads Camps Prisoners in Quiet Acts of Defiance.” Print copies of the article on this page. Watch the videos on this page. 3. Process Groups. a. Discuss how Chaplain Kapaun modeled AND nurtured virtue. Possible answers: He identified with Soldiers, leading by example and giving them the will to live. He reflected to his fellow-POWs a love of which is no greater—someone who was willing to lay down his life for another. He provided authentic religious ministry of word and sacrament, and mercy. b. Describe ways Chaplain Kapaun modeled and nurtured virtue: such as, saving the life of Herb Miller, giving away his own food, acquiring additional food for POWs at great personal risk, lifting the spirits of others, conducting Easter Sunday mass, saying prayers, reading Scripture, washing clothes for others in freezing water, sharing the suffering of the dying, etc. c. How does Chaplain Kapaun’s example apply to chaplains and chaplain assistants at different echelons and in different kinds of units, as well as those from different faith perspectives. d. How does the Chaplain Corps’ mission interface with efforts by the Center for the Army Profession and Ethic (CAPE)? How is it different? Things to consider: Inclusion of different kinds of moral challenges: Black and white or gray? Be-know-do? Categorizing virtue, rules, and consequences? Religion as an individual resource for character development; UMTs as expressions of institutional commitment toward that end. e. Based on your assignment and service, how can you apply Chaplain Kapaun’s approach to strengthening the faith of others to build their character? How can you assist others to become confident and commited leaders of character? 4. Check on Learning: Describe how Chaplain Kapaun strengthened the faith of others to build their character. How can you apply it to your role in the Chaplain Corps? Provide three examples. 5. Conduct an AAR. SMEs on Moral Leadership Training: CH (COL) Jonathan Shaw; CH (LTC) Mark Fairbrother; Mr. Frank Doerr at Fort Benning *This theme will intersect with the Army’s efforts toward cultural change—The Army Profession and the CCH’s FY13 theme of Religious Support Professionals within the Army Profession. Topics capitalize on lessons derived from Chaplain (CPT) Emil Kapaun’s life, ministry, and military service that contributed to his posthumous award of the Medal of Honor.
