Schwartz Rounds ® Caroline Dancyger Clinical Psychologist & Schwartz Round Facilitator Pan-London Cancer Patient Experience Event 9 July 2014

The case for something different Cancer Patient Experience Survey Turnaround = cuts, cuts, cuts Staff Survey Supporting staff should be a central driver of strategies to improve: – patient care – productivity – financial performance

The origins Kenneth Schwartz The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Care Kings Fund The Point of Care Foundation

What is a Schwartz Round? A space to reflect on the impact our work has on us –Not about advice giving or problem solving A panel of speakers present a case/ theme –Each person talks about their experience and the impact the case had on them Then the audience joins in –Share reactions to the stories –Ask questions about panel members experiences –Reflect on their own experiences and share stories

The evidence Leads to changes in staff perceptions –Positive effect on interactions with patients –Enhances participants’ understanding of the perspectives and challenges of colleagues –Enhances interdisciplinary communication –Improves sense of support –Decreases staff stress and sense of isolation Recent NIHR funding to measure impact on patients

Schwartz Rounds at Barts Health Launched in May 2014 at Whipps Cross Hospital Clinical Lead: Angela Wong Facilitators: Nichola Kane & Caroline Dancyger Steering group

The challenges at Barts Health Where to start? Getting buy-in Publicity, Publicity, Publicity! Not a quick fix

Feedback so far Schwartz Rounds are definitely needed & wanted Attendance –>100 staff –Drs, Nurses, AHPs, Social Work, Chaplaincy, Cancer Information Specialists, A&C, Governance, Education 70% evaluations rated it as ‘Exceptional’ or ‘Excellent’

What attendees have said… Open & honest conversation - rare in this current climate This was a really good session with open discussion of a difficult issue Excellent. Very insightful to see how teams work together This is an excellent initiative; paying attention to the emotional well being of staff and having time to talk about the complexity of caring with compassion It’s a privilege to hear peoples experiences I’m not alone!

The future… Get more facilitators trained Roll out across multiple sites How to get nurses off of the wards?

Any questions?
