Earth Day 2008 Ashley Eaves, Amy Waldrip & Laura Sturbleng Introduction to Education Dr. Regina Ryel

Introduction A team from the Introductory Education class at NWACC organized an Earth Day tree planting event. NWACC students collaborated with Sugarcreek Elementary school and local nurseries to plant trees on the Sugarcreek campus.

Project Overview The project served 3 purposes: To introduce the students to environmental studies. To involve the students in their community. To save the world!

Community Aspects of Project This project served the community of Sugarcreek Elementary by providing them with more trees.

Course Content Objectives Examine our beliefs and opinions about teaching and learning. Extend our understanding of self as a learner and future teacher. Integrate our knowledge of self and students to the context of the school. Broaden our understanding of the role of schools in our society. Review practical issues related to the teaching profession.

Methods Ashley contacted Mrs. Nauman at Sugarcreek Elementary, and was able to get project approval. Over the course of a week we visited several local nurseries seeking donated trees. We designed shovels for the children to use and take home.

Technology Used Digital Camera – Panasonic Lumix Microsoft Word Processing Computer and Printers Internet Search Engines Power Point Front Page Vehicles

Skills Achieved – Team and Individual Teamwork Patience Tree Planting Teacher Techniques – “Three Steps” – Keeping children engaged

Project Results Trees were successfully planted. Children had a chance to get involved in their community. Children learned about Earth Day and the value of keeping the environment safe.

Ideas for Future The small trees we have planted will eventually turn into large maple shade trees. The children will be proud as they pass to higher level schools and leave their legacy. No global warming!
