ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY Engineering Front End Engineering Software at Akzo Nobel Engineering Plant Engineering Life Cycle 2005 Henk Boerboom

ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY Engineering / slide 3 Akzo Nobel Engineering bv

ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY Engineering / slide 4 Engineering tools The basics: Engineering calculations: various tools Document oriented CAD: AutoCAD 3D Design: PDMS Document Management Project Management “Advanced”: Basic Engineering Tool: ???

ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY Engineering / slide 5 Basic Engineering Tools, a brief history Development of Basic Engineering Tool prototype B.E.S.T EU proposal by AE, ICI, DSM and RWTH Aachen with partner Zyqad Ltd. Proposal rejected. Zyqad fails project goals. Search for alternatives. Requirements for Basic Engineering Tool identified. Use of Aspen Zyqad at AE Start Comos® PT Pilot

ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY Engineering / slide 6 To develop a tool for efficient process engineering based on the reusable storage of design solutions Public domain engineering knowledge by RWTH Aachen (group of prof. Marquardt) Complementary knowledge domains by plant owners easy to use data oriented front end (not detailed) engineering interface instead of implement B.E.S.T Proposal (1996), project objective easy to use data oriented front end (not detailed) engineering interface instead of implement SPI-NL

ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY Engineering / slide 7 Requirements (2003) easy to use (GUI + working methods) interfacing not implementing, data exchange supports best practices and common knowledge reusable workflow, many design disciplines, iterative approach design cases data oriented

ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY Engineering / slide 8 The Challenge of a Basic Engineering Tool

ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY Engineering / slide 9 Goal: desired data model and flow Sim Data Process Data Basic Design Data Basic Engineering (FEED) Detailed Engineering Comos® PT Detailed Design Data BEPBEP Comos® PT document Problem

ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY Engineering / slide 10 Experience with Comos® PT Comos® PT is a very versatile tool Customization is easy (if you know what you want) We still spent quite some time to adapt to our standards Innotec is eager to learn from its customers Innotec has proven to be a real partner Data oriented workflow requires a change in attitude Engineers all “need” their old school symbols and data sheets

ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY Engineering / slide 11 Concluding What’s to be learned from out experience: Software tools only offer a basic infrastructure for supporting your workflow. Users still build their own data models, data sheets (1:1 old style), ISO symbols, etc. Data exchange between real life applications not standardized: did anyone say “STEP”? Do we want to cooperate?
