Today’s Objectives  SWBAT solve two step equations.  SWBAT solve word problems using two step equations.  SWBAT simplify and solve multistep equations.  SWBAT solve word problems using multistep equations.

Two Step Equations  There are several types you might see. Here are some examples:  5x + 12 = -13  6 = m/7 – 3  (y – 1)/4 = -2  -x – 4 = 9

You try a couple  4 – 5k = -16  -24 = -10t + 3

Word Problems  Sometimes, word problems require us to write and then solve our two step equation to find the answer. Here is an example:  A delivery person uses a service elevator to bring boxes of books up to an office. The delivery person weighs 150 lb and each box of books weighs 50 lb. The maximum capacity of the elevator is 1000 lb. How many boxes of books can the delivery person bring up at one time?

You try one  Two college friends rent an apartment. They have to pay the landlord two months’ rent and a $500 security deposit when they sign the lease. The total amount they pay the landlord is $2800. What is the rent for one month?

Multistep Equations  Multistep equations require us to first simplify and then solve to find our solution.  We simplify by distributing and/or combining like terms!

Multistep Equations  Some examples…  5 = 5m – m  -8(2x – 1) = 36

You try a couple  11m – 8 – 6m = 22  -2(3x + 9) = 24

Multistep Word Problems  What about these?  There are 3 consecutive integers whose sum is 48. What are the 3 integers?

Multistep Word Problems  There are 3 consecutive odd integers whose sum is 69. What is the sum of the 3 integers?  How is this different from the previous one? Does this difference matter?

You Try Two  There are 3 consecutive integers whose sum is 27. What are the integers?  There are 3 consecutive even integers whose sum is 30. What are they?

Batting Practice  I will put you into four groups.  Every person in the group will write down and solve every single problem on their own paper.  Your paper will serve as a class work (quiz) grade for today.  I will stand at the front of the room and toss you a tennis ball with a number and equation on it.  You must write down the number and equation, and then solve it.  When everyone in your group correctly solves it, call me over and I’ll check it. That counts as a successful hit.  The group with the most successful hits at the end of class wins!

Homework  Complete the worksheet and study for your quiz tomorrow!  Come to tutoring if you need to!

Test Return  Many of you did very well – we had no 100s but we had a lot of grades in the 80s and 90s.  If you are not happy with your test score, what can you do?  Make sure you return your test to me on your way out the door.
