About the Teacher I graduated from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas in 2004 with a Bachelors of Science (Major: Biology - Minor: Geology) Entered the workforce after one year in graduate school with an environmental company.

History Worked with the company for 3 full years and got tired of 24 hour call. Worked at an oilfield waste disposal yard separating drilling fluids for a year and started my teaching training. Returned to Lee High School in August of 2009 and started teaching science.

About Miss Giles I graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas in 2003 with a Bachelors of Science (Major: Exercise and Sport Science Minor: Spanish) Entered the workforce before graduating, worked in Cardiac Rehab and Fitness through University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.

History I worked for UMC for almost 5 years, and decided to complete my teaching training. Began teaching career in elementary education in Decided to move to Arlington, Texas and become a full-time nanny for almost 2 years. After that, I worked as a physical therapy aide for almost 2 years in Arlington, Texas Returned to Midland to teach school at Lee last year.

Syllabus Overview Yearlong assignments: Article Reviews: 4-5 articles reviewed each 6 weeks. These will count as a test grade. Scientist Profile: a 2-3 page profile of a scientist from the area of science we are studying. (Astronomers and Cosmographers during the first two 6-weeks, and Geologists, Geophysicists, Archaeologists, and the like during the last four 6-weeks) Test grade.

Methods and Materials -Information mostly delivered in Lecture format. -Individual research will be required. -There will be reading assignments through the year. -Hands on and practical labs will be interspersed through the year.

Methods and Materials Cont'd. -A spiral to keep notes in. -Exams are not comprehensive!!!!!!!!! -Folder for handouts and returned work (spiral pockets are fine). -Writing utensil of choice to take notes with. Work that is turned in must not be in any light color that could be hard to read.

Method “C” – Conversation o 4 levels of conversation  Level 4- Outside voices- Used if/when we are outside for laboratory exercises  Level 3- Used for presentations so that the entire class can hear the presenter  Level 2- Conversation volume that will not disturb other groups  Level 1- Very quiet whispers  Level 0- Silence

C.H.A.M.P.S. Method “H” – Help o How do you ask for help with something…  Method 1- Raise your hand- this is the preferred method. I/We will get to you as quickly as possible. To be used during instructional time.  Method 2- Using a level 1 voice, ask a neighbor for assistance. Used during Independent work and group projects.  Method 3- Emergency- Yell “Emergency!” That will get our attention and your problem will be addressed.

Method “M”- Movement o What level of motion is acceptable during the Activity  Level 3- Working on a laboratory exercise  Level 2- Moving from one place to another if we are getting into groups or picking up computers/research materials  Level 1- Independent work. Staying at your desk. Sharpening pencils. Generally not disturbing other people.  Level 0- Freeze!!!! Nobody anywhere

Method “P”- Participation o What counts as participation and what does it look like?  Active engagement in the current activity Lecture/Notes- listening, asking questions, writing the material down Lab- Working with your group and participating Individual projects- Working without disturbing others Testing- Remaining quietly at your seat
